Justin tore off his black and gold tie as he came tearing through the door, nearly taking off his ears in the process. “Oi! Someone let me borrow a tie. I got soup on mine for the third day running.”

“Use a cleaning spell,” Ernie answered from under his bed where he was investigating dust bunnies that had been eating holes in his socks.

“Can’t! Too distracted. I’ve got an angel waiting for me downstairs and I’m afraid what Susan may say to her.”

Zach started laughing at the thought of the Hufflepuff girls taking on a single Ravenclaw. “Don’t worry, mate. Megan’s bound to keep her in check. The majority of her hair will still be intact if you hurry. Have you thought about leaving off the tie? It is after hours, you know. They don’t require you to wear the thing twenty four hours a day.”

There wasn’t much choice considering there was not a tie in sight for Justin to beg, borrow or steal. It felt wrong to leave off the only accessory he ever wore. Even when he wore the jumpers his mother kept sending him, he wore a tie. Without it, he felt… like Ernie. Or worse, Zach, who never wore the tie right to start with. He liked being Justin Finch-Fletchley - one half of the Bash Brothers, that kid who ran into the Basilisk his second year and got Petrified, the heir to the Fletchley fortune, the boy who would have worn his tie to bed if he could have. Eton would have appreciated his desire to wear his tie.

But Padma wasn’t at Eton. She wasn’t going to be at Oxford or Cambridge. She was here. She was downstairs. Oh, god! Susan was downstairs, Megan-less.

“Do I look alright?” he asked to the room at large. There were a few murmurs from boys who cared less what he looked like. Zach was still laughing. Ernie was still under the bed. It would have to do.
