Summary: John puts a tape deck in the Impala and the music is one thing the Winchesters can agree on (at times, at least).
John got a tape deck installed in the Impala. He bought the tapes of his favorite music and was proud to be able to play them in his baby.
Dean and Sam seemed to find music soothing the more they heard it. Dean was quick to memorize the words and he’d sing them to Sammy in the motel if he was upset or scared. That made John smile.
He’d also bought some of the music Mary had enjoyed. It made him feel closer to her sometimes. Other times, it just made him sad to think of her. He just missed her so much.
The first time he missed her for a reason besides being lonely for her was when he couldn’t remember the words to Sammy’s lullaby and he was holding the screaming baby in his arms. He’d just cried along with Sammy. Sammy missing her words of comfort and John feeling like his memories of his wife were slipping away.
His favorite times were when he could pop in a tape that all three of them loved and they would sing along, loud and with a smile, even though not in tune. That’s when they felt like a family.
It was their way of bonding. Those bonds would get them through hunting and whatever it brought. How hunting put a strain on them as a family and as three separate hunters.
Music was a steady presence in the Winchester lives. It was their way to relax and reconnect with each other and their own humanity.
