A bit of a ‘curiosity fic’ I wrote for these two. A little bit of Night World knowledge and Mare’s reaction to it…but of course they get off-topic again. Bless! ^_^;
Warning: Some suggestiveness. XD;;

“Ash?” Mary-Lynette leant up slightly so her face was level with her boyfriend’s. “You awake?”
“No.” Ash frowned, opening his eyes and smiling at her apologetic look. “And it was such a good dream too.”
“Sorry. I just…I had a question.”
“You always have a question…or twenty,” he quipped. She rolled her eyes and pressed her body down on his so he groaned suddenly.
“Mare…” Ash closed his eyes, his mouth a tight line. He opened his eyes and she saw the faint lust in them. “Please don’t do that.”
“Be good and answer me then,” she instructed him sweetly, wrapping her arms around his neck. She pressed more gently this time and smiled at his gasp. “And if you’re really good, I’ll reward you.”
“Damn you, woman!” Ash growled, kissing her lips hungrily. “Go ahead and ask then.”
“Well,” Mary-Lynette paused, closing her eyes as he pulled her closer still, laying her head on his chest thoughtfully. “I wanted to know if…there were any other creatures of the Night World. I mean, I know there are vampires and werewolves…but what else?”
Ash thought about it for a few seconds, then shrugged. “There are witches, of course. A few of my cousins, the Harmans, are witches. And I don’t mean green faces and brooms and all that stupid stuff. These are genuine, real authentic Hearth-Women.”
“Hearth -what?” Mary-Lynette was confused now.
“Hearth-Women. They’re - well, do you know what wicken are?”
“Oh. Sure, I do.” Mary-Lynette nodded. “They were people who were healers, who -”
“Who got accused of being witches and were burnt at the stake, yeah.” Ash nodded grimly. “Well, Hearth-Women, or the Harmans as it’s abbreviated, do have some power. They can cast spells but there are also strict rules on what they can and can’t do with their magic.”
“Such as?”
“Basically,” Ash stroked her hair over her forehead, kissing it. “We have our anonymity to protect. They can’t practice anything that might endanger that, first and foremost.”
Mary-Lynette nodded, listening intently. “I see.”
“Then there are the Shapeshifters. They have the form of a human but can also take the form of an animal when they wish.”
“…There are no...ghosts or spirits or anything, then? In the Night World, I mean.”
“No, not that I’ve heard of, though there are stories.”
Mary-Lynette was silent, thinking about all of it and how she could never look at the world in quite the same way anymore. The more the learnt about the Night World, the more her sense of normality and what was real seemed to shift. And the more vulnerable and small she felt as a human.
“Mare, are you okay?” Ash’s arms tightened around her protectively, his voice concerned. “You’re shaking.”
“Sorry. I’m okay. I just…I was thinking about what you said.” She tried to smile as she looked up at him. “It’s scary to think that these people were - are - around me all the time and I didn’t even know it.”
“Don’t be scared,” he breathed, touching his fingers lightly to her lips. “I’m here.”
She smiled and nodded. “Yeah. I know. I love you, Ash.”
“I love you too, Mary-Lynette.” He kissed her softly, stroking her hair back behind her ears gently. “I’ll always protect you.”
“I know that, but…”
“What, sweetheart?”
“I just - I want…” Mary-Lynette shook her head, trying to find the words. 2I want to protect you, too. I don’t want to be just saved all the time, Ash.”
“You already saved me once,” he said quietly.
She remembered Jeremy with a faint twinge of pain and sadness and looked away from him so he couldn’t see her tears.
“You’re always saving me, Mare.” Ash lifted her face up so he could look at her. “You’re here. You’re with me. That’s what keeps me going, otherwise -”
He sucked in a deep breath, sighing. “Otherwise, I just couldn’t live with myself. The selfish, monstrous creature that I am-”
“Don’t!” She covered his mouth with her hand, her eyes stricken. “Stop that! You stop talking like that right now, Ash Redfern!”
Mary-Lynette shook her head hard at him, tears standing in her blue eyes. She couldn’t stand it when he talked like that. “You’re…not…not anymore. I couldn’t - I wouldn’t - love you this much if you were! Soulmate or no Soulmate. I would have just rejected-!”
They both winced at her words; the thought unbearable. Ash lifted her hand away, smiling tenderly at her to show it was okay.
“I’m glad…that you didn’t.”
“Stupid,” she wiped brusquely at her eyes. “I hate you.”
“I’m sorry.” Ash wiped her tears away gently. “I’m sorry, Mare.”
“Just don’t…don’t say stuff like that to me. Ever.”
“I won’t. I promise.” He chuckled at her disbelieving expression and raised his hand in mock vow. “Scout’s Honour.”
“…But you were never a Scout.”
“How do you know?” he laughed.
Mary-Lynette shook her head, smiling a little. “It just…doesn’t fit.”
“Doesn’t fit…” Ash shook his head at this phrase, chuckling.
Mary-Lynette started to retort, but paused to wipe her remaining tears off her cheeks. It brought him up short and he looked up at her, his expression pained.
“Oh, Mare.” He held her close, rocking her gently. “I hate it when you cry.”
“Well, then you stop saying ridiculous things!” she retorted, embarrassed at him babying her.
“Okay, okay!” He sighed deeply. “I’m not a monster. I’m just perfect. Happy?”
She sniffed. “Well, I wouldn’t go that far - ah! Ash!”
Mary-Lynette gasped as he suddenly rolled her onto her back, leaning over her. His eyes were liquid fire and her protest struck in her throat as she felt the intensity of his gaze and emotions through the haze. She closed her eyes as his lips crushed down into hers, a low moan rising in her throat as she reached up to hold him tightly to her.
At the very back of her mind, she recalled what she had been trying to ask him when leading up to all this, but decided that it didn’t matter now. She supposed that asking if phoenixes existed would have been a stretch too far of her already taut imagination. Perhaps a Shapeshifter could become one as preference…

A/N:- Agh, yes, yes, I know Mare wouldn’t ask such a thing but then again, she might! Curiosity can lead to funny assumptions you know! I like the little suggestive stuff here…Ash is so impatient and downright…ahhh, I love it! ^/////^;;
And yes, teensey bit of angst thrown in. Poor him, feeling all monstrous. Edward Cullen has nothing on Ash Redfern; he’s so much more believable because he actually has been a monster in his life.
Lemme know what you think? XD
It’s been a long time since I’ve updated, I know…T-T;;
