The door shut with hardly a squeak, but Kanan must have heard the click anyhow.
"Welcome home, Gonou," she said, smiling over a half-folded pile of laundry in the bedroom.
"I'm home, Kanan," Gonou smiled back. "I bought ingredients for a special dessert for you tonight."
"Oh, I can't wait!" Kanan clapped her hands with girlish glee, her entire face lighting up. "I'll clear up this laundry right away."
As his hands automatically went through the business of washing the rice and vegetables for dinner, Gonou couldn't suppress the grin that seemed to well up from deep within his chest. He wondered at himself sometimes, that he could think of such things as making a special dessert for his lover, or play happily with his young students. The lonely days in the Catholic orphanage, where all he was concerned with were his books and nothing else in the world, those days were long gone. Replacing them was this soppy giddy glee that filled his entire being, it felt like.
"Dinner is served, milady," he called, putting the last plate of stir-fry onto the table.
"Thank you, darling." Kanan emerged from the bedroom, swaying hips clearly defined against her linen slip. Gonou couldn't resist taking the few steps to her side and sweeping her up in a hug.
"Ahh, Gonou!" Kanan giggled, wrapping her arms around Gonou's neck for balance. Gonou nuzzled her neck playfully; she retaliated by placing a resounding kiss on the top of his head.
"Good thing cooked food keeps well," Gonou smiled. "Ahh, but this won't keep..." Sweeping Kanan into a damsel-in-distress carry, he made his way to the dinner table and eyed the bowl of surprise dessert - mousse - in consternation.
"Well, then, we can just take it with us!" Kanan laughed. She paused, one arm around Gonou's neck, the other halfway reached out for the bowl. "Ah."
"Ah what? What've you forgotten this time?" Gonou asked quizzically.
"Eh, this used to be a friend's favorite dessert." Kanan scooped up the bowl hastily, nearly unbalancing them both. "He had the most lovely red hair... and hands that were almost as nice as yours." Her voice was wistful.
"Ahh, am I supposed to feel jealous now?" Gonou teased half-jokingly.
"Not unless you were incredibly petty. It was a long, long time ago, and far far away." Kanan grinned impishly up at Gonou. "But I think you'll feel grateful to him after you find out what I learned to do with cold mousse and two warm bodies~"
"Gonou revive!" He charged into the bedroom overenthusiastically.
"Aaah! I just changed the sheets!!"
