It was so easy- too easy, almost- to love him. Because of his blonde hair and matching eyes. Or because he was the innocence that Edward had left behind.
But it was just as easy to hate him.
Because he represented everything that Edward hated about himself. Because he could see everything he'd done wrong in the dead eyes of his lookalike sin.
It was easy- too easy- to hit him. To feel their skin connect with a sharp noise, as Edward's fist caught Pride's jaw. To let blood stain the ground, because he was immortal, and he couldn't feel it anyway, right?
Roy had to restrain him, once. He'd taken Ed's arms and twisted them in an awkward way, and it didn't hurt, but it stopped him from cracking Pride's skull with his automail. The blonde struggled and squirmed furiously, but Roy had kept his hold.
And slowly, he seemed to become weaker. His kicking ceased, and his flailing arms dropped to his sides. Roy continued to hold him, and the grip became gentler as he realized Edward's fury was draining. And finally, when it stopped altogether, he realized that the sharp huffs of breath weren't angry snorts, but failed attempts to hold back tears and small utterances of the homunculus' name.
By then, of course, the wounds were healed, and Pride had stood watching, gaze fixed on the two before him. He watched the tears as they gathered and fell, and stepped forward to bring his fingers to Ed's chin and tilt his head up. Edward stared back, hopeless, tear-filled eyes begging for Pride to have healed, though the sensible part of him knew that he would. His jaw worked, and he managed a small, helpless word.
"Sorry."
The homunculus only looked back at him, as if deciding something, and for those few moments, Edward felt as though his heart was cast in iron. But then, he felt Pride's arms around his shoulders, fingers at the nape of his neck, and a cheek pressed to his own.
"I know."
