Haldir wept as he watched his Elven lover fall, pierced by the blackened sword of an orc in a battle he neither wished for nor believed in. Elrain had wanted to sail long ago and leave men to their fate, but Haldir had protested, saying that the men of Arda needed them, needed their strength and their arrows, their grace and their light.
When the battle ended, Haldir was alone, and he closed off a part of his heart, vowing to never get close to anyone again.
The Valar wept with Haldir, but Elrain's death was necessary, for he was not the love of Haldir's life, he was not the one who would save Haldir from himself.

Centuries later, the golden Elf found his resistance tested, and after weeks of denial, he finally let himself be seduced by Erestor, the raven-haired beauty who swore to love him unto the ending of Arda. They lived in happiness for several centuries, or so Haldir thought, until he came back to their talan early one evening and found Erestor on his knees in front of Glorfindel, eyes closed, pleasure etched on his face as Glorfindel thrust gently past his lips and deep into his throat.
Without a word, Haldir left, and again, the Valar turned their heads and wiped away their tears, feeling every bit of Haldir's pain, and wishing that there had been another way for fate to take it's course without the breaking of Haldir's heart for a second time.

The children of Gondor swam when the sun was high, they ran through the fields just to feel the wind on their faces, they chased one another across the city for hours on end, returned to their homes and did their chores, and then they climbed into their beds and slept away the darkness, anxious for another day with each rising of the sun.
Their parents watched over them, their nannies, their elder brothers and sisters, their tutors, and even their neighbors looked in on them now and then.
But the Valar themselves watched over one little boy, one special, blue eyed child with a kind heart and gentle hands, with lips that turned up into a smile when he saw his older brother, and trembled with fear when his father raised a hand to him, punishing him for every thing he did, it seemed, and even more things he did not.
Each night, the boy would dream of something…some*one* who was just beyond his sight, someone who needed him desperately, and someone who would give Faramir more love than he had ever known.
Yes, the Valar watched Faramir closely, because they knew that one day, the child would grow into a man, and that man would be the love of one very special Elf's life; that man would save their beloved Marchwarden of Lothlórien in more ways than one, giving him the strength to love again.

And one day, many years later, on the day that Faramir of Gondor unknowingly crossed into Lothlórien and was confronted by a very cold and distant Marchwarden, the Valar smiled to themselves and promised to find a way to make sure the young Man could sail with the Elf he would eventually marry.
For his part, Faramir fell in love at once, despite the fact that the object of his affection had an arrow pointed just above his heart, and the blue eyes before him held no friendliness, only a blankness, an anger, devoid of laughter and joy, looking for all the world as if he had not smiled for a millennia.
Faramir put his hand on the arrow and gently pressed it downward, and much to Haldir's own surprise, he allowed it.
"Why are you here?" the golden Elf demanded. "You have no leave to cross into the Golden Wood."
Faramir smiled and something in Haldir's heart warmed at once, though he fought against it with everything in him. "I am here for you," Faramir said softly, not knowing where the words came from, or even what they really meant, but remembering every dream he had had over his lifetime that had brought him here, to this realm, to this Elf, to this moment. He was not afraid, or even the least bit uncertain as he continued. "Can you not feel it?"
Haldir swallowed the lump in his throat and closed his eyes, refusing to look at the dark haired young man before him. "What foolishness is this? I cannot *feel* anything, and Men can not simply wander into these borders unannounced and uninvited!"
When he opened his eyes again, Faramir had moved closer, and Haldir marveled at how he could not have heard him.
"Yes," Faramir said as regarded Haldir's eyes with tenderness, the same eyes he had dreamed of for most of his life. "You certainly *do* need me."
"No," Haldir said softly, telling himself that he should back away, should run, should kill the intruder before him who spoke all too familiarly with him and looked all too knowingly into his eyes. But he couldn't seem to move. "I do not need anyone."

And the Valar laughed as the young man they had sculpted from birth to be Haldir's savior, boldly stood up on tiptoe and pressed their lips together.
Exactly one month later, Haldir finally agreed to have dinner with Faramir, if only to make him stop asking.
One month after that, Haldir woke to find Faramir in his bed, curled up against him, stealing all the blankets and pressing his icy cold feet against Haldir's legs, and icy hands against Haldir's chest. The young man was snoring softly, looking for all the world as if his every wish had been granted. Haldir thought he should find another bed, or sleep on the floor, or wake Faramir and demand he return to the talan Celeborn had given him. Instead, he tugged at the blankets, pulled Faramir closer and told himself again that he would not, under any circumstances, allow himself to love another, especially this presumptuous human who seemed intent on breaking down every last wall Haldir had built around himself.
And exactly two years after Faramir came to Lothlórien, Haldir closed his eyes and prayed to the Valar not to let him lose Faramir, or, if Faramir died, or left him, that they would take Haldir into the Halls of Mandos at once, for he could not bear to lose the Man he loved beyond all reason. Then he opened his eyes, took Faramir's hands in his own and repeated his vows as he wed the love of his life.
