It wasn’t a normal relationship between one person and another on any terms. For one, he didn’t know who the insane redhead was, just that the man followed him around all the time and made him go insane making sure he was safe at night in his house. That there wasn’t some spiky haired stalker hiding in his closet to convince him of things he didn’t understand at all. Roxas wasn’t about to tell anyone, of course, because none of his friends or anyone else ever saw the cloaked other. Sometimes, he’d have a whole week without the incessant pestering, but today wasn’t one of those luck filled days. There he was, leaning against a building casually, like he belonged in Twilight Town or something. Roxas gritted his teeth, looking away and straight ahead as he passed by, fingers curled into fists at his side.

“Hey, Roxy. Remember me yet? It’s Axel, if you forgot since last time.” The taller figure strolled over to walk in step with the blond, casually propping an arm on Roxas’ shoulder. His other hand rose up and spread out in front of him to enunciate, write his name in the air. “A-X-E-”

“I know how to spell your stupid fucking name.” He touched his temple, shrugging the arm violently off of him. “What I don’t know, is who the fuck you are and why you want to bother me!” Pick up the speed of his steps, try to ignore the fact that Axel was keeping up easily, the redhead’s boots stepping lightly on the dusty pavement where Roxas’ heels scuffed the ground. The mock hurt -or real hurt, why would he care?- look the other was staring into the side of his face went by like he didn’t feel it burning a hole into his head. It was a little harder to ignore when Axel suddenly grabbed a shoulder, pulling it and spinning the blond to face him.

Axel had green mirrors for eyes, he realized this in a lazy way, shocked into freezing instead of running, pushing, yelling like he normally would have. Mirrors that bored into his being and found exactly what his soul must look like, and yet Roxas couldn’t even penetrate the glassy surface to try and see what Axel was thinking. The only hint was the upset furrow of the brow, the serious line of his mouth. It frustrated him that the freak was so unreadable, unpredictable.

“Why would I ever lie to you, ever?” The gloved fingers around his shoulders tightened with the last word, Axel searching the uncertain, pale face in front of him. He thought the same thing the blond thought about him. Roxas was too far out of reach, all of the emotion and feeling mixed in his expression impossible for the nobody to understand.

“Why wouldn’t you? You’re just some random guy who says we were best friends. I mean I could be-” He really hadn’t been expecting it, not at all. Who would have thought it would happen? But it did, the redhead had pulled Roxas close in a swift movement and kissed him. It wasn’t like the clambered, meaningless touches that happened with one too many drinks at parties. Instead it was careful, soft. The blond had started to step away, uncertainly swelling as he was about to unleash oblivious fury on the redhead when the taller one pulled back, looking at him with those mirror-eyes and stopping the rampage in its tracks. The hands still resting on Roxas’ shoulders weren’t shoved off right away.

“I would never, never lie to you. Was that a lie?” The two stood for a moment longer, before Roxas shook his head, wishing somewhere inside that he could lie. He couldn’t.

“I… don’t know.”

axel/roxas, kingdom hearts
