He stood alone. Fresh grass swayed around his feet, the heat of the night heightening the sweet smell of flowers, filling the air with a perfume of stars and summer.
Sasuke sighed, took another step forward and wrapped his arms loosely around Naruto’s neck. It was his birthday today, and his doorstep was littered with gifts from over half the females in Konoha, but he’d left them behind to look for his best friend, finding him deep in solitude.
“I’m sorry,” Naruto said. He hadn’t jumped at Sasuke’s presence, probably having sensed him long before.
“Don’t be such a moron.”
“Bastard,” Naruto scoffed, pulling away slightly from Sasuke’s rare embrace.
“What are you apologizing for, anyway?”
“I didn’t get you a birthday present,” Naruto mumbled.
“So?”
Sasuke didn’t like being doted on much, anyway. He was always treated specially, so why should his birthday be any different? Why should be suddenly take interest?
“Everyone else did.”
“You’re not everyone else,” Sasuke said with a smirk. “Dobe.”
“I wish I was.”
Sasuke hit him hard enough to make him stumble and fall to his knees in the grass.
“Idiot,” he snapped, kneeling down himself, jerking up Naruto’s chin to look him in the eye. “You’re better than anything...” he confessed softly. “Better than any gift anyone could ever give me.” Hesitantly, he brushed a briefly sweet kiss over his rival’s cheek.
