Summary: A year later and Sora and Roxas have a conversation.
0000
A year later had found him standing above a grave. The grounds were wet and puddles littered the area, including at the base of his feet. At first, he wondered what time it was and when would breakfast start. Then, he wondered why he stood over a grave when it was so wet out. Finally, he wondered whose grave it was.
Axel’s headstone stood proudly, just like the Nobody, in front of Sora. His eye’s journeyed to the date carved forever into the crudely cut wood. He then looked into a puddle and asked, “It’s been a year, huh?”
His reflection nodded and opened its mouth. While no noise came forth from the puddle Sora could hear the response in his head. “I miss him.”
The sides of Sora’s mouth rose a little. “I know. You made him a grave while I was sleeping. Mom couldn’t get the mud out of my pajamas for weeks.”
“I miss his mind games.”
Sora blinked. “Why would you? I hate his mind games. I could never tell if he was telling the truth or not.”
“Axel never used mind games on me. He’d do them on everyone else, generally for my amusement. He used them on Demxy a lot, though.” Sora could feel Roxas’s smile in his head, probably Roxas looking at a memory that involved the subject the two were discussing. The smile in his mind disappeared after a while and a feeling of darkened moods pushed its way in. “I feel lonely.”
“I’m here for you.”
“Its not the same.”
Neither said anything for a moment. Then, “I’m sorry.”
“For what, Sora?”
“I allowed him to die when I could’ve helped him out.”
Roxas shook his head. “First off, he didn’t die. Nobodies cannot die since we don’t have hearts. We just disappear. I don’t where to though.” Roxas continued as Sora opened his mouth to speak. “And Axel wanted me to live. I forced you to move because I did not want him to vanish in vain.”
“I’m still sorry.”
“Don’t be. I’ll meet him again one day. And then we won’t be lonely and we can have a relationship, a real one, without the fear of one of us not coming back after a mission.”
Sora blinked, again. “So, you two were…?”
“Kind of. Kind of not. At the simplest form we were best friends.”
“Ah.”
A butterfly with bright red wings floated by. Its wings were spread out and allowed the wind to carry it. A gust of wind decided to be cruel, though, and pushed it downwards. The butterfly crash-landed onto the ground where it was forced to stay from its own tiredness and the winds blowing unto it.
The sight made both boys want to protect the butterfly. Sora moved to help it, but the winds died down and the butterfly was able to fly again.
Sora turned his attention back to the grave. “You’ll see him again. And I know you both will have your own happy ending.”
Roxas didn’t reply, but did smile with gratitude etched all over his face.
Sora smiled back and turned towards the path that would lead him to the docks of Graveyard Island, the island that housed the deceased of the Destiny Islands.
The red butterfly soared higher and continued to allow the winds to take it where the winds wanted it to go.
