Cory's eyes were about ready to pop out of his head at the sight of Infinity in her prom dress. He was standing in the foyer of her family's home, staring up at her as she walked down the stairs.
Her dress was stunning. It was a scarlet red silky (or possibly satiny) material with thin straps that criss-crossed over her back. There was a side slit up to the middle of her right thigh and the skirt ended in a flowing train. At the base of her back was a triangular Austrian crystal piece. She wore no jewelery and only a light covering of makeup, and her four inch heels were a shiny silver. Her hair was styled, twisted up in curls on top of her head.
"You look gorgeous." he said as she stopped at the foot of the stairs.
She blushed and looked him over, smiling. "You don't look so bad yourself, Cory." she said.
He was wearing a black tuxedo and a white dress shirt, and his bowtie matched her dress. He'd slicked his hair back with gel, trying to keep his "fro" under control.
"Look at you two, you look so cute!" Infinity's mother exclaimed. "Here, turn around, Cory, let me get a picture!"
Cory wrinkled his nose a little but turned around to face Mrs. Williams. Infinity chuckled and took his arm, hooking her arm around his.
"Just smile, it'll all be over soon and we can go." Infinity whispered, leaning in close.
He smiled at her and then leaned into her a little. He caught a whiff of her perfume, which was the scent of vanilla and flowers. He leaned in closer to get a better smell and his nose bumped into the outer shell of her ear. She jumped a little, turning her head toward him and blushing. Mr. Williams cleared his throat loudly and they both sprang apart, Cory's face turning bright red.
"You just keep those hands to yourself tonight, son." Mr. Williams said gruffly.
Cory nodded, looking serious. "Oh yes sir, no worries."
"Charlie, relax." Mrs. Williams scolded. "They'll want to dance, after all."
Mr. Williams growled and started to say something but Mrs. Williams gave him a stern look and he grumbled.
"Don't worry, Dad, Cory will be a perfect gentleman." Infinity said with a grin. Her mother snapped a few more pictures and then Cory gave Infinity her corsage.
"Oh, Cory, it's beautiful!" she said. The corsage was made of white roses and clusters of demure white blossoms with a silver ribbon, and it had a wristband. She held out her hand to him, and he slipped the corsage onto her wrist, grinning at her.
"Ready?" he said.
"Of course." she said. She gave her dad a kiss on the cheek and then hugged her mom. "Don't wait up, Mom and Dad. We'll be back later."
Her father gave her a stern look that told her that not only would he be waiting up for her, but he would be watching them like a hawk on the front step to ensure that Cory was a gentleman.
Infinity cleared her throat and pulled Cory toward the door. "Bye!" she called over her shoulder. She walked outside and then smiled gratefully at him. "You're a lifesaver, Cory. Thank you for being my date to the prom."
He smiled. "I didn't want Ricky McClellan to be your date 'cause I'd have to kick his ass."
Infinity laughed and started to open the passenger door of his car, but he intercepted and opened the door with a flourish. "Your carriage awaits, milady." he said, affecting a comically overexaggerated British accent and bowing slighty as he motioned into the car with his hand.
She giggled and hiked up her dress a little as she sat down. "Thank you, kind sir."
"No, thank you." he said as he closed the door. He was practically skipping as he went around to the driver's side of the car and got in, fastening his seatbelt and then starting up the car.
When they arrived at the prom, they went inside and got their pictures taken in front of the themed backdrop. The prom theme for that year was "Castle in the Sky," and the backdrop consisted of a sky blue background with white clouds and a white garden trellis. Cory stood behind Infinity, wrapping his arms around her waist and leaning in close to her. She placed her hands over his and leaned her head against his a little.
"You smell really nice." he whispered as the photographer snapped the photo.
She grinned and took Cory's hand, leading him away from the photo area. "Thanks." she said, looking at him. "You look really handsome."
He grinned, looking pleased. "You want to dance?"
"Of course!" she said with a grin. She pulled him out onto the dance floor. An hour into the prom, Infinity's feet started to hurt and she kicked off her heels, shoving them under a nearby table that was decorated with fluted champagne glasses and napkins with the theme and date on them.
There was a tense moment when Ricky McClellan showed up to the prom. He was drunk and tried to manhandle Infinity. Cory was about to punch him -- he even had his fist clenched and his arm cocked back -- when a couple of teachers rushed over and grabbed both boys. Ricky ended up getting thrown out of the prom and Cory came close to the same fate, but Infinity argued in his favor that Ricky had been the one to start things and Cory had just been defending her. It helped the matters that Cory hadn't actually punched Ricky, so the teachers let him stay, telling him that they'd be keeping an eye on him.
"That was intense." Infinity said, breathing a sigh of relief as the teachers walked away.
"Yeah, no kidding." Cory said with a shake of his head. He looked at Infinity with concern in his eyes. "Are you okay?"
"Yeah, I'm fine." she said. She smiled at him just as a slow song started to play. "One last dance?"
He grinned and took her hand, pulling her close and draping one arm around her waist. She draped her free arm around his neck. He swallowed a little nervously, knowing that he was probably dancing way closer to her than her father would approve of, but then he caught another whiff of her perfume as she leaned in, resting her chin on his shoulder, and he smiled, no longer caring.
After the prom was over, Cory escorted Infinity back home. He walked her up to her doorstep and they stood there awkwardly, knowing that her father was watching. "I had a great time tonight." she said, smiling.
"Me too." he said, smiling in return.
She glanced toward the window and saw the curtains drop back into place. She chuckled a little and put her hand on Cory's cheek, caressing it with her fingertips before leaning forward to kiss him gently. His eyes widened in surprise a little and then he kissed her in return, his hand caressing her upper arm. The kiss deepened and then the front door opened and there was a loud clearing of a man's throat.
"Good night, Cory." Mr. Williams said sternly.
Cory and Infinity broke apart, both flushing red, and Cory backed away, waving politely to Mr. Williams. "Good night, Mr. Williams." he said. He grinned at Infinity. "Good night."
"Good night, Cory." Infinity said, a dreamy smile on her face.
Cory started walking backwards toward his car, taking one slow step at at time. Mr. Wiliams harrumped and Cory quickly turned and hurried to his car.
