A/N: First chapter in a multi-chaptered fic

Laughter was easy to come to those lingering around the large room. They had much to celebrate these days. If only to enjoy what they could now before fate threw something at them to test their wills to survive. Many of them were thankful to exist as someone laughed in merriment at the crude joke told by Emishi. Ren was one of those people, she was content now. Not long ago she’d been questioning her own existence. But Kazuki had taught her that as long as people cared for her she meant something. The only two people missing now were Shido and Ban, they were off somewhere competing on some job. Her eyes fell to the beautiful man standing across the room. Even now he made her breath catch in awe. The soft features stood out in the vacant room, a mockery of the old building.

Kazuki felt the eyes land on him once more bringing a soft smile to his face. He knew what the girl wanted but only thought of her as a friend. One day soon he’d have to break things to her gently. Would she accept his words? While he cared for her, his heart belonged to another. Most of their friends already knew of the relationship he shared with Jubei. As much as he cared for those around him, he loved the man that had been his childhood friend. Ren was a sweet girl but not for him. His eyes trailed over the man in his thoughts. Jubei was standing near Ginji talking about the latest job Ban had tried to go solo on. Seemed Shido had been in the café when Havn came in with a client. The two men were knocking heads again. Shame they were missing a great party.

Emishi groaned when no one laughed at his latest joke. They all were too tense and business like. Except Ren the girl was practically drooling over Kazuki. Didn’t the girl realize yet that the man was that pretty for a reason. Ginji was hastily agreeing with Masaki and Teshimine over something. He’d forgot to listen into the conversation. Makubex and Sakura were standing in the corner looking ready to kiss. “Hey, why don’t you two love birds stop that and be social? Come on, it’s a party.”

“Leave them alone, it’s nice to see Makubex smile. We should all be so lucky.” Ren tossed a smile towards Sakura who was blushing slightly. At least that girl was brave enough to ensure her heart’s desire knew how she felt. Unlike herself, she was too scared of rejection to let the man know. She blushed seeing that all conversation had stopped and eyes turned to her in curiosity. “What?”

“I think Ren has a crush. Come now, spill it.” Emishi laughed when the girl turned bright red at the declaration. Several gasps were heard as he snickered. A harsh elbow slammed into his side. What had he done? Toshiki didn’t look too happy at the moment, the blonde was glaring at him. Too late he’d seen the discomfort he was causing Kazuki. Well hell, it wasn’t his fault the girl liked the man and it wasn’t returned.

Ginji frowned seeing the girl looking uncomfortable. The subject of love was always a tricky one. Only one woman had loved him and it hadn’t been returned also, so he could understand how Kazuki felt. To care for someone and know that because the feelings were missing you would most likely hurt them. The man beside him had tensed as well. Smiling he looked up at Masaki. “Ah, Masaki what’s the look for? Have you ever been in love?”

The blonde man frowned and stared past the younger boy. Had he ever been in love? The question brought back something he’d been trying to forget. But how could he? She was still alive and so was he. Would a day go by that she didn’t enter his thoughts? That he wouldn’t regret his actions? Ginji had already changed his way of thinking but by then it had been too late for them. He’d left her and she’d moved on without him. It was for the best. The woman still held a large piece of his heart but it was in the past. His future was here with the ones he could help, his new family. “Yes.”

“Really? That’s hard to imagine. So who was this woman?” Ginji couldn’t imagine the man bringing a woman flowers or candy. He’d known him for years but had never heard him speak of a female. What would it be like to be hopeless in love with another person? He was shocked that the man had experienced it. “Come on, we’re all curious.”

“You really want to know? You figure since I told you the truth about who I really am, I’ll let you in on my sordid past?” Masaki wasn’t sure if he could. Every pair of ears had tuned in to see what he had to say on the subject. He’d opened up and told them about how he’d been working for Brain Trust to rule the lower section. That was something impersonal, speaking of her brought back painful memories. “It was twenty years ago, I was around your age. Very young and stupid at the time. I met the most amazing girl one night. The only problem was she was dating my friend at the time. Still that didn’t stop me from pursuing her. I can still see her face, I can’t begin to describe how she made me feel. One thing led to another, she ended up pregnant. I’d just been hired by Brain Trust. I walked away from her unwilling to settle down. I went back months later to find that she’d married my friend. I stopped by and he greeted me at the door. Told me to leave that they were happy. I still wasn’t willing to give up everything, so I did. I figured he’d make a better father for the child. I walked away and never looked back. When I left Infinite Castle I headed to Tokyo briefly. I’d heard news of his death some years ago. A few months ago I finally set eyes upon my child and the woman I’d left.”

“Did you speak to them?” Ginji couldn’t believe it. He actually had a child somewhere out there? No one had known about the man’s past. The pain was there in his eyes, the pain of loss. Why hadn’t he gone back for the woman he loved?

“No. What could I say? I haven’t seen her since the day I walked away. She had a happy life with Higurashi. They started a family at her father’s shrine, she’d moved on. They stayed together until his death and bore a son together. I will not insult her by showing up after so long. The girl has grown up believing that Higurashi was her father. I will not tell her otherwise. I can be happy with what I saw.” He’d shown up in time to see the girl getting ready to head to work. She was beautiful, just like her mother. “It is better this way.”

“Yeah but don’t you want to know her? You aren’t with Brain Trust any longer. Are you willing to go the rest of your life and never know your child?” Teshimine smiled seeing the pain there. It had to be hard for the man. To finally see his daughter and to have to walk away. “Perhaps you don’t have to tell her. But there would be no harm in talking to her, see how she’s really doing.”

“Silence,” Kazuki heard the soft chuckling in the distance. It came as fast as it had started. “It might not be wise to speak of such things here. Things may be quiet now but those above will not sit docile for too long. We must not forget that you turned against them. They will not be pleased. No need to give them something to use against you, if you already haven’t. We must still all be on our guard, no matter how calm things look on the surface.”

Kagome turned down the street making sure she was still on the correct one. Someone honked behind her as she took her time turning. Some people were so rude even in this city. Hell she wasn’t even sure she was in the correct place. It was the address her mother had given her but it was old. She couldn’t find the stupid building in question. It was like it didn’t exist. She’d most likely have to find a place to sleep tonight after calling her family. Her mother had been against this idea but Kagome had to do it. After losing Inuyasha this was something that was driving her. She’d come back from the past upset and hurt from losing the hanyou. Breaking down in her mother’s arms over what could never be her mother had opened up to her.

It had been shocking to finally learn of her mother’s tragic love affair. Somehow she couldn’t find it in herself to be angry about being lied to for so long. They’d done what they thought best for her out of love. She remembered the man that had been called Daddy. He’d been kind and sweet, treating her as his own. Nothing would change the fact that she though of him as her father. But knowing that her real one was out here somewhere. She had to know why he’d left and never came back. Didn’t he care about her at least? Her mother had said he was the wild type, always reckless. Or he had been twenty years ago. Kagome could still see the regret and loss that haunted her mother. Despite what happiness she’d found with her husband a part of her had never gotten over her first love.

Kagome thought herself to be over the hanyou now. It was thoughts of her father that kept her awake at night. What was he like? He had to be special if her mother still loved him after all this time. She said the company he’d worked for owned a building here, so where was the blasted thing? Cutting off the air conditioner, she rolled down the window. The light caught her as her finger pushed the disk into the stereo. Some music would help her relax some. Evanescence’s Before the Dawn was the first to play. Turning up the volume she leaned into the leather seat. It was easy to start singing and forgetting where she was.

He stopped in his tracks as the voice reached his ears. The city was always noisy and not to his liking. The girl was in a small red car waiting at the light. His eyes strayed to her as the soft voice raised along with the music. A slight smile crossed his face finding his prey. The girl couldn’t be over twenty, appearing young. Taking a few steps forward, he wanted to get a better view. She seemed completely lost in the singing unaware of his appraisal. The face was angelic, beautiful and surrounded by a mass of raven hair.

Kagome felt eyes upon her making her glance out the window. A tall man wearing a long black trench coat and hat was standing only a few feet away from her. Blue eyes met violet across the distance. Her heart stopped as he smiled. She couldn’t stop herself from returning it as he nodded. A car blew it’s horn catching her attention. Breaking eye contact she began to move once more. Wow, he’d been cute in a mysterious dark kind of way. ‘Okay Kagome, no more bad boys for you.’

Akabane watched the car pull off as the flow of traffic took the girl further away from him. Pity, she’d had a nice voice and was pretty. Either way he needed to get to his appointed meeting before he was late. Being late was tacky.
