Maybe Someday
People-watching… Now that was something he enjoyed. If you stayed in one place long enough, you’d soon see some of the folk that passed there on their daily routines. Perhaps you might learn their names if you listened, or maybe even some of their favorite things. You might even learn a bit about who they really are.
But tonight, Vash was watching one specific person as she slept. With a bottle of alcohol, rum, to be exact, he gazed at her in the faint moonlight from a wooden chair by the window. Every once in a while, he’d take a swig. Powerful stuff, rum was.
“Hey, insurance gir-er, I mean Meryl-how about getting a drink with me?” She stared at him like he was crazy for even asking. “Solely on business, of course,” he added, attempting a nervous smile. It might be his last chance.
Meryl sighed. “Maybe some other time. I’m too busy right now.”
“Not so busy at the moment, are you?” He whispered it too quietly for her to hear. She shifted in her sleep, snuggling further under the blankets. Vash leaned back and drank deeply from the bottle. Afterward, about half of the spicy golden liquid was left. He rose from his seat and carefully set it upon the nightstand beside her bed, trying not to wake her. He shouldn’t have been here so long. Livio would surely be waiting for him to return. Vash had told him just a few minutes, but a few minutes had turned into half an hour. Time was running short. Knives was on the move.
Meryl awoke when the suns shone brightly through the translucent curtains. As her grayish blue eyes wandered about the hotel room and settled upon the half empty bottle of alcohol, she smiled. A few tears began, but never fell. Maybe someday, she thought as she gazed at it from her pillow. Maybe someday soon.
