Today they were supposed to talk about why they were here, Kory said it was an important part of getting to know each other and building trust. They didn't have to say more then they were comfortable with, but it wasn't like they didn't already know the basics. Tim and Cassie were in grief counseling together, Bart and Kon were in family counseling, and Mia was in “women's issues” which was pretty much code for rape counseling. It didn't take a genius to figure out why they were here. But apparently they had to tell each other because telling was important or something. Tim didn't really care it wasn't an important secret anyways. He even volunteered to go first.
“I'm here because my mom died.”
“I'm sorry, that must be very hard for you. How did you react?”
“I don't know.”
“Robin?”
“I guess I got kind of paranoid.”
“How so?”
“Just stuff.”
“You think you might be borderline?” Bart cut in his head turned to the side as he examined Tim.
“What?”
“Borderline personality disorder, in this case paranoia, it's usual characterized by pervasive distrust and suspicion, and dude, you won't even tell us your real name, even if it's like a matter of public record and we could totally look it up anytime. Plus you're like always on high alert.”
“I...no.”
“Ok.” Bart shrugged returning to his usual fidgeting.
“Thank you for sharing Robin.” Kory gave him her usual special-smile-just-for-you...ok maybe
he was paranoid, he should in theory talk to Dr. Grayson about that, the fact that he wasn't going
to probably said something.
“Who wants to go next?” Kory looked around the circle, “Conner?”
“Um, I guess because I'm not adjusting well to living with my grandparents.”
“Do you have any thoughts on why not?”
“While I didn't even really know I had any, I didn't even have parents, and then all of a
sudden I'm living with them in this stupid hick town and I just...yeah. Who's next?”
“Cassie?” Kory asked.
“My sister died, apparently I'm not coping effectively.”
“How are you coping?”
Cassie just glared until Kory nodded and turned towards Mia, “Would you like to go.”
“I'm here because I made lots of bad choice and now I'm sick and Ollie wants me to learn to
deal, I guess.”
“Would you like to tell us anymore?”
“Not really.”
“Alright, Bart your turn.”
“Because I'm a bad kid?”
“No one here is bad Bart, least of all you.”
“Than I don't know.”
“Can you guess?”
“...I'm too much work for Jay to deal with?”
“And who's Jay?”
“He, well, I guess he's like my Grandpa's war buddy, or something like that.”
“And why are you living with Jay?”
“Well, Max had a stroke and so obviously he can't take care of me and we can't ask his daughter too because it's too much, and my mom still has to take care of my grandfather so I can't live with her and Wally is too busy or something.”
“Wait what does your grandfather have to do with you living with your mom?” Conner asked confused.
“While he's kind of crazy and thinks I'm like evil or he's evil or something so he kept locking me in the closet and this one time he tried to kill me so my mom decided I shouldn't live there anymore and why you all looking at me like that?”
“Shit man. That's-that's messed up.”
“Not really, I mean it's not like he succeeded.”
“Yeah but, dude, he tried to kill you.”
Bart shrugged as an awkward silence settled in.
“My dad did that.” Mia suddenly spoke up, “Lock me in the closet, he used to like beat on me and stuff so I ran away.”
“I ran away too, not from my parents, I was in this institution, it was weird and anyways I ran away too,” Conner added.
Tim used to run away when he was little. He'd spend all day and most of the night at the playground waiting for his parents to come find him until he got too cold or hungry and went back home. No one noticed he had been gone. He didn't share that story with the group.
