Dean had to get away from his Dad. Sam had announced that he was going to Stanford, Dad had blown up and Sam had left--for good.
His whole life, Dean had taken care of Sam. He'd tended to him, protected him and loved him, maybe more than he should.
Daydreams had included Sam since he'd hit puberty and Sam's changing body had grabbed Dean's attention. He'd lusted after and wanted Sam, but never told him. He was disgusted by his thoughts and feelings. Sam was his little brother for Christ's sake!
He replayed the fight in his head as he took another swig of his beer. He'd known that one day Sam would want to leave hunting. He hadn't expected it to come so soon. Dad's knee-jerk reaction didn't come as a surprise.
He'd always thought of Sam as his. His brother. His responsibility. His closest companion. It hadn't occurred to him until that night that Sam was his own person. He hadn't waited until Dean was ready to let him go, he just left. And took Dean's heart with him.
