Second Lieutenant Hawley’s maternal grandfather was a surgeon; his paternal grandfather pulled teeth in the back of a general store during the Great Depression.  Further back, he comes from a long line of midwives and snake-oil salesman.  More recently, there’s his Dad, who was a combat medic with the 173d Airborne Brigade in Vietnam.  There’s ( Read more... )

This is really nice. (My brother is a doctor, has wanted to be one since he was 10. I think you caught it.)

That's a lovely thing to say! I'm always fascinated by people who know exactly what they want to be...and then become it. Probably because it's relatively rare among folks I actually know. Glad you liked this, and thanks for commenting:)

Thanks! It's kind of a one-off story: don't know where it came from:)

Lt Hawley is a very well-made character, it almost read like you were bringing him in from another fandom. And you've piqued my curiosity about his past.
But the best part, truly, is the bit about reading Tolkien and not doing the voices. That line really rang true for me, and it's stuck in my head (in a good way).

Thank you! Hawley appeared out of thin air for this story, and fills a very brief, nonspeaking role in one other, and that's the last I've heard of him. But it was important they he be the kind of person who, even as a too-cool-for-you teenager, loved scifi/fantasy and gave all the characters their own voices when reading to his kid brother. I'm so pleased you appreciated that little detail :)

I love Hawley being idealistic about few things but one of them is about the stars and so he pitches his levity at what he thinks it will take to get him through this interview and out there. He thinks he's blown it for letting slip that he has baggage but the last person who would ever knock him back for that would be John!

Loved the whole detail of the backstory that went with this too!
