Scottie had taken a cab from Newark to Philly and was in the city by 10:30pm. He had left immediately after the game. A quick shower, dressed in a white buttoned shirt and black slacks, and he was carrying his duffle bag to the waiting vehicle. The cab didn't smell too bad, and Scottie hoped the none of the cigarette ashes or that sticky stuff on the floor got on his clothes.

Standing outside a brick apartment building, Scottie paid the cab driver what he owed him and bid the guy a good night. Then, he looked up. He could see the window to Joff's bedroom from the street. It was lit with a low light and there was no movement behind the tan curtains. Scottie knew Joff was definitely home, because the man never left any lights on while out, and also knew he wasn't sleeping. He looked down at his watch briefly, catching the hour hand slowly creeping towards the number eleven. He had about six hours. Scottie had six hours before he had to catch a flight to Phoenix, and he was damned to make the best of it.

The night was fairly cold, so pulling his jacket tighter and watching his breathe before him, Scottie proceeded into the building and up to the elevators. He pressed the button and waited, no more than a couple minutes, and after the soft ding sounded he was on his way up the building. There was a slight uneasy feeling in his stomach. Scottie wasn't sure what it was. Nervous? Scared? Anxious? It had been a little over a week since Scottie saw Joff. After the trade, he came back to get some more stuff but that was only for a couple hours. A short hello, an even shorter blow job in the bedroom, and then Scottie was on his way. This visit wasn't that much longer, but long enough for old feelings to brew and Scottie wasn't sure what he was going to do.

The elevator doors opened and Scottie stepped out. Adjusting the bag on his shoulder, he started walking down the familiar hallway and stopped in front of Joff's door. He had a spare key in his wallet - always did, never went anywhere without it. And so Scottie decided, without much hesitation, to let himself in. The door was locked, as it always was, and once opened Scottie could see there was no Joff around. He shut the door quietly, placed his duffle bag on the ground, and began making his way through the apartment.

Scottie walked through the living room, noticed no mess of food or drinks or even clothes lying around. The small dining room table was completely cleared, and even looked like it had been wiped down a few times too many. Scottie glanced at the floor. Spotless. His stomach suddenly went sour. Joff only cleaned when he was upset. Poor Joff.

There was a faint sound in the kitchen and Scottie turned his head in that direction. There he saw Joff, standing before the sink, cleaning. Dish after dish was passing through his hands and Scottie wondered if those dishes really were dirty. He sighed, quietly, and made his way up to his best friend. Joff didn't notice until a hand was on his right shoulder and another hand was on his left hip. Then the hands pulled him close, pulled him against another warm body, and Joff was about ready to sucker punch the intruder. That was until a familiar voice filled his ears and Joff couldn't believe it.

"Hey, sexy."

Joff's hands froze. Was he dreaming? He thought he was. There was no way Scottie would be in his apartment right now. He was supposed be on a plane back to Phoenix, because Scottie told Joff that's where he was going to be and that's why he couldn't hang out after the game. But when those hand tightened their grip, and the breathing on his neck became heavier, Joff knew he wasn't dreaming. No time to be mad, but be utterly surprised and so fucking happy and Joff just turned around in those arms. Wet hands be damned and he took Scottie in his own arms.

They hugged for a good while, breathing in each others scent as to absorb the memory. Scottie was the first to pull back, slightly, just lifting his head a little and bringing a hand up to Joff's chin to make him do the same. Their eyes locked and then they kissed. A shared, passionate, overwhelming kiss and suddenly the world around them disappeared. It was only them, only Joff and Scottie standing in that kitchen, and every care or problem or unhappy moment ran out of their existence.  It was about as good as it could get for them, and they accepted it.

Scottie's hands were at Joff's back, grabbing his shirt and holding on tight. He didn't want to let go. He didn't want this moment to end. Scottie needed this kiss and he finally had it and it was unfair that it could end. He pushed his tonuge further into Joff's mouth, invading the familiar area and exploring what was his. Joff tasted like takeout, maybe a day old pizza or chinese food, but there was also a taste of fresh wine and Scottie wondered how long Joff had been drinking.

When air was needed, just a quick breath, Joff pulled back first and broke the kiss. Scottie groaned, tried to reconnect their lips, but Joff put a hand on either side of Scottie's face and stopped him.

"You lied."

Scottie was confused for a moment before realizing Joff was refering to what just happened. "I wanted to surprise you."

"You still lied."

"Joff." Scottie narrowed his eyes a little and stood up straight. He wasn't quite sure what was going on. "Are you mad at me? I didn't think I was doing anything wrong..."

"You made me upset. I really thought you didn't want to see me tonight." Now that the conversation was proven sour and Joff's mood went with it, Scottie stepped to the side and put some distance between them. This wasn't going how he planned it to go.

"Well, how was I going to surprise you if you knew?"

"Scottie, that's not the point. Do you know how much I..." Joff sighed and rubbed his forehead. "How much I cried because I really thought I was going to see you tonight. And then you told me you had to take the trip back with your new team..." Scottie cringed. He forget he worded it that way. "...It hurt, Scottie. And I know it's not your fault, but dammit, you didn't have to say it that way."

There was a little voice inside of Scottie's head that told him not to do it. The voice told him to just stay where he was and not say anything. But Scottie was never the one to listen, and the voice was proven right when Joff pushed him away.

"Don't touch me, please..."

"Lupes, what's - "

"This is too hard, Scottie, just too fuckin' hard!" Joff shut the water off, practically slamming the handle down, and started out of the kitchen.

Scottie followed, little voice still be damned. "What are you talking about?" He followed Joff down the small hallway and was about to step into the bathroom after him when a door was slammed against his face. "Joff!"

"Go away, Scottie!"

"Joffrey..."

"Please, Scottie, just leave me the fuck alone...I can't take this anymore..." Joff fell to the floor, leaning his back against the bathtub as he covered his face in his hands. Tears were threatening to break through.

"Joff, don't do this. Please, talk to me. What's wrong? Why are you mad at me?"

There were a couple sobs that Scottie could hear and his heart started to break. He jiggled the doorknob but the door was locked. Fuck!

"Can you just leave?"

"No! Tell me what the fuck is wrong!" Scottie tried to keep his voice in a calm demenour but he was getting pissed. It wasn't fair for Joff to be acting that way. Doesn't he know that Scottie is hurting just as much?

Scottie settled himself against the door, leaning into it on his left shoulder. He spoke softly, but just enough for Joff to hear. "Tell me, baby, what can't you handle anymore?"

There was a pause, a couple more sobs, and then Joff told him. "Everything. Everything with the trade. I can't handle seeing him out there on the ice. Daniel Carcillo. Who the fuck cares about him anyway? He's not as good as you, or hot as you, he's just not you. He shouldn't be on the team. And you, well, you're pretty much across the fuckin' world and there's nothing I can do about it."

"Oh, Joff, please, let me in there..."

"No, Scottie. It hurts too much. I can't stand waking up every morning knowing you're not there."

"You can always call me, Lupes. It doesn't have to be this bad. The season is almost over and - "

"And then what? You sign with Phoenix for another year, and after we spend a great off-season together, which for me would be like two months, you go back to the fuckin' desert and I stay here in Philly?"

"We did this before." Scottie sighed and rubbed his forehead. This was getting to be too much...

"It wasn't like this before, Scottie. Before we didn't know anything, or feel anything, or really care. It's different, and I don't like it. I think it would just be best if..."

Scottie's mouth dropped in fear. No, don't say it Joff...He started to jiggle the doorknob again. He thought maybe if he did it enough it would break and he could get in. No such luck.

"I think it would be best if - "

"Joffrey, please, don't - "

"If we ended our friendship, Scottie."

The whole apartment went silent. Scottie's hand fell from the doorknob and landed at his side. He was pretty sure his heart just exploded, and when it registered in his mind what exactly Joff had just said, his whole body started to ache. His mouth went dry, and he tried to swallow the lump in his throat but it wasn't working. Scottie couldn't believe it.

"Joff, you don't mean it."

"Yeah, I do. Now please, get the fuck out before I call the cops." Scottie was sure he heard crying, or maybe he was just imagining it because that's what he wanted to hear. He stared at the door, fist in the air to put a hole through it, but that wouldn't solve anything. This is what Joff wanted and he had to respect it. Why try to fight with someone who had already made up their mind?

"Okay," Scottie choked out. "Goodbye, Joff." His heart was beating fast as he made his way back through Joff's apartment. Scottie stood there for a moment, duffle bag on his shoulder, hoping maybe that door would open and Joff would come running out, saying he was sorry and didn't mean it. But after a couple minutes, after realizing that wasn't going to happen, Scottie walked the rest of the way to the front door.

Scottie took one last look back towards the bathroom. Still nothing, and letting out a soft sigh, he opened the front door.
