Nick hung up the phone and walked quietly into the other room where his mates were watching a movie.
"Pavel," he said softly. "Chris, it's time."
Pavel nodded quietly and stood. "I'll get Hank," he whispered and walked out of the room.
Chris turned off the movie and silently walked to him. "When did you tell them we'd be there?"
"In a few minutes," Nick replied and sighed heavily. "How are you?"
Chris started to answer but instead just shook his head.
Nick pulled him close and held him tightly knowing that a large part of the reason they'd stayed so close to Dom and his family recently was Chris' friendship with him.
"You know this is what he wanted," Nick said gently before kissing the top of Chris' head.
"I know," Chris whispered. "But that doesn't make this easier."
Nick hugged him tighter for a second before releasing him. He looked up to see Pavel with Hank and Ryan. "Ready?"
Ryan nodded. "Yeah," he whispered. "Let's go."

The door opened before the vampires could get to the porch.
"He's in the bedroom," Alena greeted them. "Thank you for coming, he'll be so glad to see you again."
Pavel nodded and pulled her into a tight hug. "We are honored for everything he has done for us over the years," he whispered and kissed her cheek.
"We've been honored to be your chosen," she told him. She turned to Chris and hugged him as well. "No tears. He won't want that," she warned him.
Chris nodded and blinked several times. "I know and I'll try," he said, his voice thick.
"You can see him," Alena told them. "But maybe not all of you at once."
Nick gently put a hand on Chris' back. "Go ahead," he told his mate. "You go first and spend some time with him and then we'll go back."
He nodded and slipped into the room.
"Hey Dom," he greeted quietly when he saw the old man turn to him, "You look good."
Dom snorted. "You never did lie well."
Chris smiled and walked closer, sitting down on the edge of the bed. "You look at peace," he corrected.
Dom nodded. "I am," he said before coughing harshly. He waved off Chris' attempt to help but accept the glass of water that Chris offered after spotting it on the dresser.
"I've been deeply honored to know you," Chris said softy. "And I'll never forget our time together," he assured his long time friend.
"I didn't want to like you," Dom told him. "You were my back-up; most of them didn't matter, but you snuck past that."
Chris smiled and took Dom's hand, running his fingers along the paper-thin skin. "What can I say? I'm a likable guy," he said softly.
"You are," he agreed. He closed his eyes for a few moments before asking, "Chris?"
"Yeah?" Chris whispered and squeezed his friend's hand gently. "You stay for a few more minutes. Pavel and the rest want to talk to you too."
He nodded. "Will you look after my familly?" he asked softly, just before Chris could step out of the room.
Chris smiled. "I will," he promised. "I'll always keep an eye on your family."
"Thank you," he whispered.
Chris watched him for few more seconds before stepping from the room. "He wants to see the rest of you," he told them.
Pavel nodded and quietly walked into the room. "Hey Dom," he greeted and leaned down, kissing his friend's cheek.
"Pavel," he greeted. "You look like you always did."
Pavel smiled. "And you have the same smile," he whispered. "I'm going to miss you."
"You've been a good friend," Dom told him. "I've been honored to be one of your chosen."
"We've been honored to have you," Nick said gently as he stepped into the room.
Dom smiled up at him too. "Vampires. I never would have thought it," he said.
"Well, when I find your soul again, we're not letting you tell us no," Ryan said and smiled as he leaned down to kiss Dom's cheek.
Dom shook his head. "I wasn't meant to be a vampire."
"This time," Hank told him.
Dom managed a small smile. "This time. This time I enjoyed being your chosen."
Hank smiled back and kissed Dom's forehead. "And this time, and next time, I'll enjoy being your friend," he said softly.
"Thank you," Dom whispered.
"Thank you," Chris insisted and adjusted Dom's blanket. "You've lived a good life," he whispered.
They sat with him for another few minutes until he breathing started to become labored. "We will see you again," Pavel said before they slipped away, leaving Alena and the children alone alone with him.
Chris hiccuped and waited until they were out of the house and turned, wrapping his arms around Nick and crying softly in his mate's shoulder. "I can't do this," he whispered.
Nick held onto him, running a hand lightly through the soft blond hair. "It's what he wanted," he whispered.
"I know," Chris whimpered. "But that doesn't make it any easier." He kissed Nick's neck. "I promised to watch his children and grandchildren for him."
"We all will," Pavel assured him.
"He loved being your Chosen," Nick said softly.
"And I loved him," Chris said and wiped at his eyes.
"I know," Nick whispered, wishing there was something he could do to make Chris feel better.
"Do you want to wait here until he's gone?" Pavel asked gently. "To be with Alena?"
He nodded. "I just need a minute," he whispered as he tried to stop crying.
"Take as much time as you need," Hank assured him and wrapped his arms around Chris and Nick. "We're all going to miss him terribly," he whispered as a tear slid down his face.
Chris gripped his shirt. He tried to say something but couldn't get the words out and nodded. He'd never lost a chosen he'd been this close to before.
"You're not going to let his soul go again, are you?" Nick whispered and kissed Chris' forehead. "None of us will."
Chris shook his head. "I'll work harder to convince him to be turned," he said, brushing at the tears again. He drew in a deep, shuddery breath. "I respect his decision," he said. "But I'm going to miss him."
"We all will," Pavel assured him. "We're all going to miss him terribly." They looked over as the door opened and Alena appeared.
"He's gone," she said simply before her lip quivered and she started to cry.
Chris pulled away from the others and walked over, wrapping her in a tight hug. "He wasn't in any pain," he said to her. "He loved you. I once asked him why he didn't want to be turned and he said it was because he wanted to grow old with you and spend your lifetime together."
"I know," she whimpered and started crying harder. "But how am I going to go on without him?"
"You'll spoil your grandchildren and great-grandchildren," Chris told her softly. "You'll watch more hockey games and the football games the youngest one loves. And, when it's your time. your soul will join his."
She nodded and clutched at him as she continued to cry. "He was my soulmate," she said softly. "And, when our souls are together again, I want you to turn us. I don't want to lose him again."
He felt his breath hitch again as he nodded. "I promise," he told her. "You won't be separated from him again."
She just held him tighter as she tried to stop her tears. "He loved you dearly," she whispered and took several deep breaths. "Thank you for being here with him before he left. That meant so much to him."
"I wouldn't have been anywhere else," Chris told her. "If you need anything Alena, anything at all, I hope that you'll call me."
"I will," she promised and leaned heavily against him. "I just need ... I ... " Her breathing hitched and she took a deep breath as fresh tears filled her eyes. "I want my Dom back," she admitted, her voice shaking.
Chris felt his own tears returning. "I wish I could," he told her. "I wish that so much."
She pulled back and looked at him. "We had him," she said and wiped at his eyes. "We were always so amused with how old we got while you still look like a young boy." She paused and took a shaky breath. "We had him. And we loved him."
"We did," Chris agreed. He glanced up to see her son watching and knew that her family was nearby. "He was loved by a lot of people."
"And we knew he loved us too," Pavel assured her.
"I don't know if I can go on without him," she whispered.
"You have to," Chris whispered back. "You have a son and a daughter that just lost their father. You need to be strong and stay around for them."
She turned to where they were both watching and nodded. "Thank you, all of you," she told them before walking back to her family. Her shoulders were stooped and she looked tired as her children hugged her tightly.
Nick offered them a smile. "We'll go back," he said quietly. "And if you need anything, call us."
"We will," Dominika said. "Thank you for being here with Daddy."
"It was our honor," Chris said quietly. "Call anytime, okay?" he encouraged and wiped his eyes.
"You too," Michal told them. "We're still chosen. Call if there's ever anything we can do."
"We will," Pavel promised. "But we'll give your family time to heal." He hugged the other man and kissed his cheek. "Thank you."
The three hugged the group of vampires and then walked back into their house.
"Home?" Nick asked after a few seconds.
Chris nodded. "Home," he said quietly and sniffled. He looked back at the home and took a deep breath. "I'll find you again one day," he whispered. "And you and Alena will be together forever."
"She won't last long now that he's gone," Hank whispered to Pavel.
Pavel shook his head. "They were soul mates," he whispered back softly. "Vampires cannot survive after losing theirs and humans don't survive long either."
Hank nodded and looked at Chris. "Our poor Chris," he sighed. "He won't take that well either."
Pavel sighed softly and looked to where Nick and Ryan were holding the distraught goalie. "No. He won't."
"We'll be here for him," Hank said firmly. "And we'll let him mourn. Hopefully, the next time we meet Dom and Alena, they'll allow Chris to turn them."
Pavel nodded. He walked over to Chris and hugged him tightly. He kissed his forehead and said, "You'll see him again."
Chris nodded and took a shaky breath. "I'm looking forward to it," he said firmly and wiped his eyes. "I'm fine now."
Pavel didn't point out that he wasn't, but hugged him again before letting go. "You will be."
Chris nodded again. "I will," he promised and took Nick's hand. "I will be."
Nick squeezed it and nodded in agreement.
Hank nudged them toward the car. "Home," he suggested. "Where we can mourn our chosen."
Chris offered a weak smile and took Ryan's hand with his free hand. "Us goalies will mourn him together," he said as he looked up at the taller man.
Ryan nodded and squeezed his hand. "He was a great goalie."
Chris laughed softly. "Even if he drove me crazy," he said with a genuine smile.
"You liked him because he could," Ryan said, also laughing. "And he liked you because you kept him on his toes and weren't intimidated."
Chris nodded and got into the car. He looked back at Dom's house and smiled. He'd see his friend again one day. He just hoped it didn't take too many lifetimes for the other man's soul to reappear.

**Sometimes in the future**
"Chris?" Nick asked, tapping his mate on the shoulder. "You've been staring at that hockey player the entire game. What's up?"
Chris frowned and looked at Nick. "I know him. I mean, we knew him." He paused and looked back at the goalie and then smiled. "I think his soul's finally returned.
Nick stared at him in confusion for a few seconds before he smiled as well. He looked down at the goalie on the ice and whispered, "Welcome back, Dom."
"You think he'll run away?" Chris asked curiously. "Cause I'd like to approach him."
"As long as you don't walk up to him and blurt out you're a vampire, I think you'll be fine," Nick assured him.
Chris smiled and made his way to the edge of the arena. "Hi," he greeted as the goalie skated closer. "You're pretty good."
"Thank you," he said.
"You remind me of a goalie named Dominik Hasek," Chris said with an easy smile. "Name's Chris.
"Don," he said, smiling back. "Don't call me Donnie."
"Don," Chris nodded. "Great to meet you."
"Nice to meet you too," he said. He paused. "Do I know you from somewhere?"
Chris smiled. "I'll explain one day," he promised.
The other man nodded and then smiled brightly at the woman who was just walking up. "You made it."
"Of course," she said and wrapped her arms around his neck, hugging him tightly. "I just saw the end. You were fantastic," she said and kissed his cheek.
"Chris," Don introduced. "My wife, Alyssa."
"Hi," he greeted her, smiling happily.
"It's nice to meet you," Nick said as he introduced themselves quickly to her. He squeezed Chris' hand. Their chosen were back.
