Evgeni rushed up the stairs of Mark Recchi’s home into Jordan’s room. He shifted through the pockets in his coat before coming across the small box.
“Jordan gift…” he smiled, slumping down onto the plush cream carpet. They had exchanged presents earlier, and despite several odd packages from teammates like Brooks, Max, and Army, this small box had entranced him. He’d slipped it into his pocket, intent on opening it later. Well, it was later, right? He nodded to himself and began slipping the ribbon from the box when his phone vibrated in his pocket. He set the box down and removed the phone, curious as to why Jordan was calling him when he was right there. He opened the phone and held it to his ear.
“da? Jordan?” He heard a choking sound
“G-Geno… could you come out on the deck…and please bring the gift I got you…”
“Da Jordan. I be out.” He shut the phone and slid the box into the pocket of his semi-tight jeans before making his way back down the stairs and out onto the snowy patio. Jordan was leaned against the railing, his weight rested on his arms and his back to Evgeni.
“Geno…Evgeni” The Russian was curious now. Jordan rarely called him by his true name.
“Jordan?” he questioned, walking over to him and joining him against the rail. Jordan looked over and forced a smile.
“Geno…you said earlier you‘d make it better. That you‘d try to fix what‘s wrong with me. Please don‘t. I‘m not so sure you can fix me, Evgeni.” Evgeni slung his arm across his friends shoulder and moved closer, so close that Jordan could feel the warmth radiating from him.
“Jordan. I needing try. You are best friend. When Jordan sad, make me sad. I am not wanting you to being sad. Tell what is wrong. ” Jordan shrugged and turned to face him, causing Evgeni’s hand to slip from his shoulder as the Russian did the same.
“Geno…I- just, please open the gift I gave you. It should probably explain it better than I can…” Evgeni looked at him curiously and pulled the box from his pocket. He slipped the blue ribbon from the tiny package and let it fall into the light dusting of snow covering their feet. He was about to open the box when he stopped, causing confusion and panic to fill the young centers eyes. “Geno….why…please open it…” the Russian shook his head and smiled shyly.
“open you present too. I give present. Open when I open?” Jordan sighed in relief, pulling an almost identical box from his pocket. The locked eyes and lifted the lids from their respective boxes, and both looked down. Evgeni let out a small gasp and lifted the gold chain from the box, holding it up to the moonlight to inspect the charm on it. It was a delicately engraved hockey stick, and along the shaft on one side was his name, in his native tongue. Along the other side, Jordan had had his name translated and engraved. He set the necklace back in the box and looked up at Jordan. The teenagers eyes were glassy as he ran his fingers gently over the silver ring glimmering in the winter moonlight.
“oh god…” he muttered, tears beginning to spill down his cheeks. He gently pulled the ring from the padded box and read the inscription inside the band.
for always, Евгений.
“Jordan liking?” The teenager looked up and nodded, slipping the ring onto his finger before launching himself at the Russian.
“Geno…I love it…” he cried “I love you…” he mumbled softly into fabric of his friends shirt. Evgeni wrapped his arm around Jordan and led him over to the table, forcing him to sit down. The blonde looked at Evgeni as he sat down.
“do you like it?” he asked, motioning to the necklace. Evgeni grinned and nodded his head vigorously. “do you understand now?” Evgeni nodded again
“I am knowing. I give ring because I am… loving Jordan. Jordan loving me too” he said softly, barely above a whisper. Jordan set his hand, the one of which the ring was currently adorning, on the Russians arm and gave it a light squeeze.
“Geno, look at me.” The center followed Jordan’s order and looked up “ Of course I love you…” suddenly, a flash went off from the patio doors, and both turned to find Marc-Andre, Max, Army (who was miraculously awake), Kris, Erik, Jarkko, and Adam all grinning stupidly. Jordan growled and Evgeni just let out a slight grunt.
“they are being good at killing… what is word?”
“mood… I agree.” Jordan groaned, standing from the cold deck chair, Pulling Evgeni up with him. Max (also miraculously awake) slid the door open.
“hey boys! Not bad… It only took you, what, 9 months? You could have had a love-child by no-ow!” he exclaimed, his ranting cut off my his boyfriend. Marc smiled softly at Jordan, and the blonde knew the sly goaltender had been spying the whole time. As the new couple walked back toward the house, they could hear Army and Max arguing about who had been the final matchmaker.
“I figured it out in the first place! Come on… who got Gonch in on it? All you did was get the Gronk pissed and help him buy a necklace!”
“well if I hadn‘t, they‘d sill be ‘just friends‘! It took you 8 months! It only took me 2 weeks!” Jordan and Evgeni looked at each other and grinned.
“okay….who’s getting a Russian body check first? Army, Max, or Marc?” Jordan asked his companion, making sure everybody had heard it
“Me?” the goalie squeaked from the door
“yes you… you were spying.” the goalie shrugged
“yes, but how could I not? You two needed to get together, and Max and Army are useless. Besides, Erik was spying too!” The quiet centerman shrugged
“s‘true” Jordan smirked
“Max or Army??? Babe, why don‘t you choose?” Evgeni grinned. Both stopped arguing, turned to the couple, and suddenly took off into the house.
“oh SHIT!”
