It’s raining and it’s late. It’s probably three thirty in the morning, but I honestly don’t know the time. Ryan is sitting in front of me, cross legged, on the floor of his porch. It’s raining so hard that you almost have to yell to hear the other talking.
“I’ve never really been in love.” He says. Which I can tell is a lie by his expression and the way he’s talking. “I just never felt strong about anyone.” He runs his fingers through his hair. This is a lie too. He’s probably was badly hurt, and doesn’t want to admit it. He’s embarrassed he let it get that bad.
“You’ve never been in love?” I ask in a sympathetic tone. Ryan looks up at me.
“Well…no. I never have.” He’s lying through his teeth, but at this point I really don’t care. I smile because it’s so obvious. “Until now.” His cheeks are red. He can’t believe he just said it. He’s embarrassed because he doesn’t know what I’ll say. My stomach is in knots.
“Until now?” I ask quietly. How did we get here? I put my hands on his. He twitches because he’s nervous. He nods finally answering. Both of us are scared to say anything. I pick up his hand and gently kiss his fingers. Even if it’s a lie, it’s the best way he could have told me how he feels.
