My first fanfic.

“I signed.”
“With who?” His heart stops. He hears a long sigh on the other end of the phone.
“...Edmonton.” He stops and looks around him. It was one of those moments where he wished he was invisible. Surrounded by people, he could not let himself break down.
“I see.” What else was he supposed to say? He had promised him, he had promised the fans...
“I’m sorry.” Was he really? He didn’t know.
“Did you ever - no, uh, well... I guess this is goodbye.” He had almost asked him, asked him if their time together had meant something. It had been everything to him.
“Yes, I guess it is...” No clichés, no saying that this was not goodbye, no saying that he would love him forever and never forget him. It was just goodbye.
“Goodbye Sheldon.” His voice had almost cracked.
“Goodbye Saku.”
First Craig, now Sheldon. He didn’t know which hurt more. Craig had been his best friend since he had got to this city, the one he had always confided in. Then he was gone in the blink of an eye. Even worse, he seemed so happy there, in San Jose, without him. The calls had become less and less frequent... and had become shorter and shorter.
All around him stood the tall buildings of downtown Montreal. The whispers surrounded him as people went by. Even so, Saku Koivu had never felt so alone.
