Part 2

I woke with a light pounding in my head, but as far as hangovers went this one really wasn’t too bad. Groaning, I rolled over and pulled my pillow over my head to block out the sunlight that was filtering in through my window. I smiled into my mattress as I remembered the events of last night. So he liked me too. That definitely made things a lot easier. I didn’t have to convince him that I was worth it.

Squeezing my pillow into my chest I tried to imagine it was Colby instead and that it was him I was waking up too. I snuggled my cheek into it as I would if it were his chest. A sudden knock on the door made me jump and relinquish my hold on the pillow, my heart pounding at the sudden noise. A muffled call of my name came from the other side of the door and I relaxed, recognizing it immediately.

“Uh, come in.”

Mario walked into my room and opened the blinds, making my eyes squint tightly shut, “Come on Sid, you’ve got to get up. It’s 2 in the afternoon. I understand you guys went out last night but that doesn’t mean you should waste the whole day away.”

I rubbed my eyes sleepily shaking my head at him, “Not the whole day…just most of it.”

He laughed at me, walking over and ruffling my hair as he sat on my bed, “So how was your first day as captain of the penguins? Do much leading?”

I grinned sheepishly, “I don’t know about that. I think I was the one being led into having too much to drink.” As if to follow my response another pang shot through my forehead and I slapped a hand to my head, groaning. Mario laughed at me again, sometimes it seemed like he was always laughing at me.

“Well come downstairs. We’ll make you some breakfast…or should I say lunch and we’ll fix that headache of yours up properly. Are you going to go for a run?”

“Yeah, maybe if this pounding in my head subsides.”

As soon as he left my room I fell back onto my mattress, reaching for my cell phone. Pulling it out of its charger I stared at the blinking light indicating I had a message. Damn, I must have slept through it ringing. Maybe I was more exhausted then I thought, because generally I was a light sleeper. Oh well, I quickly called my voicemail and waited impatiently for it to go through.

You have 1 new message. To listen to- , I pushed the button, impatience increasing.

“Hey Sid…guess you’re not up yet.” It was Colby, a smile instantly appearing on my face as his voice greeted my ears, “So I had a lot of fun last night…for what I can remember. Hope you did too seeing as it was your party. So I gotta ask you, since you’re the only one who will be straight with me…I didn’t embarrass myself too much did I? Anything I should know about that the Ryans are going to tease me about later? Anything past 11 seems like a total blur. Anyways…call me back. Let’s do something today. Later.”

I flipped my phone shut, the smile evaporating quickly from my face. He didn’t remember what happened? Great. Fucking perfect even. A sigh escaped my lungs and I slumped back onto my bed, feeling more and more like I should just go back to sleep. I was about to do just that when Nathalie called up for me to come get my breakfast.

I did a quick stretch on the front lawn before popping my headphones into my ears, and cranking up the volume so as to tune out the world around me. And so I began on my usual route down the street to the park, around the neighbourhood and back again. Thoughts from last night kept penetrating my mind, though I willed them to leave me alone. I blamed the music mostly, certain lyrics or certain songs reminding me of Colby.

These little reminders were usually followed by some kind of memory of last night. Like how his lips, though nervous at first, became more confident. Or how good it felt to be gripped between his muscular, toned thighs. The feeling of his soft, warm tongue on mine, making me feel excited and giddy. I better stop thinking about this, because running with a hard-on was not ideal when jogging through a park full of kids. Someone might think it’s because of something else…bet the papers would love that.

I spotted a bench and made my way over to it to rest for a moment and stretch out one of my thigh muscles that was beginning to cramp. As I leaned against it I felt something vibrating against my leg, I pulled my phone out of my pocket and glanced at the display. Colby. A thought of not answering it actually crossed my mind. What do I tell him? Oh hey Colby. By the way, you made out with me at my party…um…no. I couldn’t not answer it though…it was Colby!

Inhaling deeply, I flipped it open, “What’s up homeslice?”

“Homeslice? Haha, nice. And not too much, went and worked out earlier. A good work out always nurses the hang over away, at least for me. I was waiting for you to call me, but that didn’t happen. So I decided to try again.”

“Uh…yeah sorry. Slept away most of the day, even slept through your phone call apparently.”

“Where are you?”

“Just on a run. In the park right now, taking a breather. You?”

“On my way to your house, do you want me to pick you up?”

“Nah, s’ok. I’ll meet you there I guess. I need to clear my head.”

“Kay. See you soon.”

“Yeah. Bye.”

I hung up and threw my phone back in my pocket, resting my forehead in my hands, elbows perched on my knees. What was I going to tell him? Hey Colby, just so you know…every time I see you I just want to take you where you stand. Yeah, that would go over well. I shook my head, trying to think straight for a minute. I’ll worry about this later, right now I better hoof it back home so I don’t keep Colby waiting for too long.

Colby’s car was already in the driveway when I finally got home, I jogged up the steps and into the front hall. Sweat was pouring down my face now, and I’m sure I looked like crap. Laughter drifted in from the living room and I walked in to see Colby sitting on the couch surrounded by Mario’s kids playing xbox. It was kind of adorable. He looked behind him and shot a grin my way, “’Bout time you got back? Where did you go, back home to Nova Scotia? Geez.”

“Colby you’re driving into a wall,” Lauren pointed out.

“Oops, my bad.” He turned his attention back to the TV screen to get back in the race.

“I’m beating you! I’m beating you!” Stephanie taunted, as her car pulled ahead of Colby’s.

“Yeah we’ll see about that.” He shoved his hand over her eyes jokingly, “HA! Now what are you gonna do?”

“You’re cheating!” she tried in vain to shove his big hand away.

“That’s the best part!”

“Ahem.” Mario was standing in the door way, arms crossed, shooting a mock glare Colby’s way.

He removed his hand from in front of her eyes immediately, smiling apologetically at Mario, “I mean, you should always play fair. No matter what. Be truthful. Yes…truthful.”

I laughed at him, “Yeah right. Well I’m going to have a shower be back in a minute.”

I don’t even think he heard me as their continued shouts reached my ears going up to my room. Well at least he can keep himself entertained until I’m ready. As I reached my room, I stripped out of my sweat soaked clothes and threw them in the general direction of the laundry hamper. The water felt nice as it washed away the sticky layer of sweat that had been coating my skin. I soaped up and washed my hair quickly and stepped out of the shower, realizing that I’d left my towel in my room.

Walking into my room I must have jumped about 5 feet in the air, grabbing the closest t-shirt to cover myself with as I saw Colby sitting on my bed.

“Fuck! Why didn’t you say you were waiting in here?” I felt oddly self-conscious, even though he’d seen me naked about a million times before this.

He seemed amused, “I’ll cover my eyes if you want. But it’s nothing I haven’t seen before eh?”

I walked over to my chair and grabbed the towel, strategically replacing the shirt with the fluffy fabric. Lying back on my bed, he folded his arms behind his head, staring up at my ceiling. I bit down on the corner of my lip, seeing him lying right there on my bed in such an inviting position made me so hot for him. I’d obviously seen him lying down before (we were room mates after all), but this was the first time I knew that there was the possibility of something being there. This feeling of not being able to breathe whenever I thought about him was thrilling and frightening at the same time.

Pushing the thought from my mind, I got dressed and towelled my hair dry…well drier. And then we were off to wherever it was Colby wanted to go. I hadn’t even asked, I just got in the car. It didn’t really matter where, as long as it was with him.

“So did I do anything embarrassing last night?” he asked finally, driving down the freeway.

“Depends. Do you consider dancing around and singing off key to Justin Timberlake embarrassing?”

His cheeks tinted the lightest shade of pink, “Um…no.”

“Ha, don’t worry. The other guys were probably so drunk they wouldn’t even remember it.”

“Maybe…Is that it? You sure I didn’t do anything else?”

He was fishing for something, but I still didn’t want to be the one to say it, “Yeah, that’s it bud.”

“Well I guess it could have been worse.”

“With you…it could always be worse. You’re the craziest drunk I’ve ever met.”

“Now that’s not fair. Dion Phaneuf’s pretty insane once alcohol has been consumed. I mean you think he’s all quiet and brooding and then BAM. Good times in Red Deer, too bad you were all the way over in friggen Quebec.”

“Tell you what next time we play Calgary, we’ll take him out and give him a Pittsburgh welcome and you can prove to me that there is someone crazier then you.”

“Sounds like a plan my friend.”

“Okay, we’re here.”

“Where is here exactly?” I looked around at the giant building in front of us.

“Oh didn’t I tell you? We’re going rock climbing.”

“What?!” I was afraid of heights, that’s why I kept myself firmly planted on the ice. Something I was sure Colby knew, since every time we were stuck on a high floor in a hotel room I refused to go out on the balcony.

Oh he knew. That evil grin on his face said everything, “Oh come on it will be fun. Do it for me okay?”

He got out of the car, but I still hadn’t moved. My hands were beginning to get sweaty as I dreaded the upcoming afternoon. He came around and opened my door, leaning over me to unbuckle my seatbelt.

“C’mon Sid. You can do this. It’ll help you get over this little height problem you have. Trust me. I’ll be right behind you.”

Although the thought of having him behind me was an interesting one, I was still reluctant to go. “You coming?” He held out his hand, and I grabbed it shakily as he pulled me out of his car. I was so nervous I didn’t even notice that he had held my hand the entire way through the parking lot.
