AN: I had to add a little something to connect myself to the story...so "ba" is the start of MY AIM, babyangelei. I actually was talking to Drew earlier and their sister actually IS in the hospital, sadly *hopes Steph'll be alright* and I just find it so cool that I could actually be related to this story, however indirectly, if a realistic twist is put in it :D..forgive my squeeful nature and naughty slight braggage and enjoy the story, k?
Chapter 1 "Ryan? Go get Drew for dinner before we go back to the hospital!"
"Alright, Mom!" Ryan shouted, getting up to go into his sister's room. Visiting home, he'd been devastated to know that in addition to losing Danny, his sister was in the hospital and the doctors had no idea what was wrong with her.
It'd been at least seven hours and still his head was swirling with anger and hurt that Danny had chosen more money over him and their team.
He tapped on the door of his sister's bedroom where he could hear the click of keys inside. Drew was the closest to her; it had hit him hard when this happened, and all he'd been doing was chatting with her friends every second they were away from the hospital.
"I'm not hungry, bro," he heard from inside before he could knock again. He stepped inside the room, managing to catch a glimpse of a name starting with 'ba' before Drew closed the window. He shook his head, remembering they were Steph's friends, not his.
"Mom will flip her lid if you don't eat, Drew, you know that."
Drew sighed. "I know. I'll be down in a sec." He shut the computer off and followed his brother out of the room. He walked into the kitchen and grabbed a plate to eat, but Ryan was stopped by the doorbell.
"Hang on, I'll be right there, Mom!" He moved to the door and pulled it open, his jaw dropping at what he saw.
"Hey, Ryan," a thoroughly humbled Danny Briere murmured as he stared at his feet where a tiny black suitcase rested. "C-can I come in?"
He swallowed hard. He was still angry at him, but god, he looked so heartbroken, like he might burst into tears at any moment, that he couldn't possibly turn him away. "Mhm," he muttered, stepping back so Danny could follow him into the house and pushing the door closed. Danny set his suitcase by the stairs and motioned to Ryan that they should prolly go up to his room.
"Can we talk?"Ryan nodded, leading Danny up the stairs. "I'll eat later, Mom, Danny's here!" and that was that.
He shut the door to the outside world and waited only as long as Danny needed to drop his suitcase before he was in his arms, wrapping himself around his back and burying his face in the Canadian's silky brown hair. Danny's mouth dropped open in shock but all he did was hold Ryan as tight as he possibly could, enjoying the comfort he still got from Ryan's embrace.
"Ryan, I-" but Ryan cut him off, looking up at him with chocolate eyes swamped with pain.
"Don't ruin this with words. If this is the last time I ever get to hold you, I want it to be something I'll remember forever."
Danny choked on a sob as tears slid down his cheeks at those words, the finality of what he'd done by leaving the Sabres so much more real. He buried his tearstained face in Ryan's shirt and just held on, wanting never to let go more than he'd ever wanted anything in his entire life.
"Please," he begged, "please say there's some way this doesn't have to end, Ryan. Say this isn't the last time I'll ever get to touch you like this."
Ryan stepped away, the reluctance showing on his face. "Danny, you know I can't. You made your choice, and it kills me, but it has to be over."
"But why, Ryan? Why does it have to be over? We'll see each other at games, at the All Star Game, on the offseason and during breaks...don't you believe in us enough to make it work?"
Even as Ryan's expression showed the fact that he was being torn in two, his eyes flashed with anger. "How dare you say that! Of course I believe in us! I'm the one who begged you to stay, remember!" He advanced on Danny, the fury radiating from him like some kind of crazy heat.
Danny backed away, eyes wide. "Yeah, I remember," he mumbled, back to wishing futilely that there was some way to get around this."I can't do it, though, Ryan," he whispered, closing his eyes against a wave of pain that swamped over him. "I can't let you go, I just can't." He opened his eyes slowly and fixed them on Ryan, letting every horrible emotion he was feeling penetrate the swirling brown. "Please don't make me."
Ryan's eyes were black with agony as he stared at Danny with a kind of pained surprise. "I....I...."
