Andy’s POV

I awoke with a headache, groaning and grabbing my forehead as if the touch of my palm on my head would relieve the pain. Rolling over to wish Ian a happy birthday, I was shocked to find his side of the bed empty. Rolling back over to the other side, I noticed the bottle of morphine was gone off the nightstand and that the clock read…2:45 PM! I jumped out of bed, throwing on a pair of board shorts and a t-shirt in a frenzy. Fuck. I had not just slept away my boyfriend’s birthday. He was going to be furious!

I practically ran down the stairs, skidding to a halt as I saw Matt in the kitchen making sandwiches. Looking out the window, I saw that Ian and Kyle were sitting out on the deck having a beer, laughing at some joke that Kyle had just told. Matt looked up from his work, smiling at me knowingly, “Well good morning…er…afternoon Andy. We were wondering when you were going to get up. Ian told us to let you sleep, even though Kyle wanted to go in and dump a bucket of water on you. He ruined all of our fun.”

“I’m sure,” I said distractedly, trying to read Ian’s expressions outside, “He’s not mad is he? That you know…I’ve slept away his whole birthday? God, I’m such a jerk.”

“No, on the contrary, it’s the happiest I’ve seen him all weekend. Here,” he handed me a tray of sandwiches, “Take this out please? I’ll grab us some more drinks.”

As I went out onto the deck, Kyle threw a bottle cap at my head, “Geez finally! We thought you’d slipped into a coma or something.”

I placed the plate on the table and gave Kyle the finger before going over to Ian, cupping his face in my hands. I tilted his chin up and let my lips cover his slowly, letting my tongue tickle the inside of his mouth gently. I felt his body relax underneath me as I pulled my lips away, “Happy birthday baby. Sorry I missed most of it.”

His smile made me feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside, he really did look happy. “You can make it up to me later, don’t worry. I’d rather you saved your energy.” He winked at me, biting into a ham and cheese sandwich.

“Ugh, you guys make me sick sometimes. You’re way too mushy.” Kyle pulled a face, like he was disgusted by the PDA, as he leaned over putting an arm around Matt’s shoulders.

Ian rolled his eyes, “Says the guy that can’t go two minutes without touching Matt in some way.”

The day went on with much laughing, relaxing and celebrating. For dinner we did as we had planned and ordered in some Chinese food, which was amazing and we’d definitely have to order again. When I got up from the table to go get the cake, Ian gave me a wary look. Clearly it was going to take awhile for me to regain his trust…understandable. I just smiled at him reassuringly, disappearing into the kitchen and getting the cake out of the back of the fridge where it had been hiding. I stuck a bunch of candles into its chocolatey surface, not counting how many I put on it, I thought 23 would be obnoxious.

I lit them and brought it out to the deck as we all sang a hearty happy birthday that could have been heard across the lake. I leaned in from behind him, placing the cake on the table. Wrapping my arms around his chest, I rested my head on his shoulder watching him blow out his candles. As Matty and Kyle cheered, he turned grinning at me and I took the opportunity to attack those lips of his again. His head leaning back into my shoulder as our tongues mingled.

“I think that’s our cue to leave….” Kyle began, but Matt interrupted, “but not before cake. C’mon cut the damn cake Andrew! You’re lucky it made it through the night.”

I reluctantly pulled our lips apart and grabbed a knife from the kitchen, my hand was shaking again, a bit more violently then it had been earlier on in the day. I lined up a straight cut, but my hand couldn’t keep it that way. I frowned down at it, trying my best to keep it straight. Ian shot me a sympathetic glance and put his hand over top of mine, steadying it and cutting into the cake. Smiling gratefully at him, I mouthed the words thank you to him, to which he just smiled as if it was nothing.

The cake was delicious, and so was Ian as I licked the vanilla ice cream from his lips, Matt and Kyle long gone to that inn they had been wanting to visit. I sat in his lap out on his deck chair, arms around his neck, his hands on my lower back, pulling me into him. I rested my forehead on his, so that our noses rubbed together, “I’m sorry…for everything.”

A grin played across his lips, “Stop apologizing. We’re good now. Just promise me you won’t hide something like that from me again. I can’t take care of you if I don’t know what’s going on. Do you promise?”

I leaned in and kissed him softly, “Promise.”

“Good. Cause I love you and I don’t want you to get hurt.”

The look in his eyes betrayed how much he wanted me to say it back. I hesitated momentarily, biting my lip, unsure of what to do at first. At my pause his face fell and he leaned his head back in his chair away from me, his hands a little looser on my waist.

Why do I always do this to him? I hated myself at that moment. He was always so amazing with me, and I’m such an asshole. Why is he even with me? He looked past me out at the lake, which glimmered even in the darkness of dusk. I was going to lose him if I kept this up.

My expression must have shown the battle going on internally because he shrugged off what he said, “Don’t worry about it. I guess I really fucked things up with the whole Dan thing, hm? Even if you never forgive me, which I completely understand, just know that I never want to leave you again.” As he said this he hugged my chest, pushing his cheek into my collarbone.

My heart beat a little faster, though I wasn’t exactly sure why. On one hand, it could have been because what he just said had made me feel amazing. On the other, it could have been because I was shocked that he was apologizing after I was a complete jerk. That pretty much made up my mind for me. I tipped his chin up so that he was looking at me, letting my thumb run over the little dimple that was there. “If you’d give me a minute to answer…I love you too.”

The change in his expression was like a light switch, completely changing over to this huge grin before he pulled me into a passionate kiss. I guess he liked my answer.
