well, i now have four less teeth in my mouth. all of my wisdom teeth were removed this morning. i've never been "put out" or "drugged" or whatever you wanna call it...in other words i've never had surgery before. for some reason i thought i was going to be completely knocked out for the procedure but i think they gave me demerol or something...it was really strange...i was conscience, but i felt no pain and kind of felt like i was really drunk.

i was also surprised at how fast the procedure was. from what i could tell it only took about an hour. i'm also surprised at how good i feel. friends and coworkers were telling me that i would be in utter misery for about 4-5 days. aside from the fact that my mouth hurts i feel perfectly fine...maybe a little tired from the pain meds. i really hope i don't get dry socket...and i also hope that this fixes my throat problem. strangely, my throat has felt pretty good today so maybe...of course, the severity of the throat pain does vary from day to day, so maybe i'm just having a good day today.

about three years ago the company i work for changed it's email program. it was a really big deal and they sent these techs around to all of the offices to install the new software. the guy came to our office on a saturday and they needed someone from my department to come in and help with the MAC installs. i volunteered for the gig. the guy they sent was from new york city and was in his late-40s. he and i got talking about music some how and i mentioned that i was huge fan of the Talking Heads. as he was from new york, he grew up in the heyday of the new york punk/art rock/no wave scene of the 1960s-1970s. he had fascinating stories about seeing bands like the Talking Heads, New York Dolls, The Ramones, Velvet Underground...etc...stories about growing up in that place and time. he told me that he had a ton of MP3s from these bands and he's burn some onto a CD when he got back home and send them to me. much to my surprise, he did. i remembered listening to these cds when he first sent them to and thinking it was pretty cool.

well, last weekend i was cleaning out my closet and i found them. i dropped them in and gave them a listen and one band in particular hit me like a ton of bricks...The Velvet Underground. i'd never really listened to them before and they completely floored me. really amazing. i went out and bought "The Very Best of The Velvet Underground" and it' truly mind blowing to me. i don't usually buy "best of" albums, but i thought it was a good place to start. what's odd is i think if someone had me listen to them five years ago i probably would have hated them. it's strange to me sometimes how our musical tastes can not so much change over time, but become more inclusive.
