So, I’ve decided to do one of those things. Yeah, one of those things where you guys decide what I write. You get two requests each and I’ll only do Avatar prompts. If something should fit perfectly in my Change of Fate AU, I reserve the right to place it there. If you want it to be placed there, that’s perfectly fine as well, of course. Oh, and if

Sokka is seven and thinks he should give Katara a real gift for her sixth birthday. He considers making a spear, but no, she doesn’t use weapons because of her magic water. He knows how much she likes penguin sledding, and knows that even though he can’t tame an otter penguin permanently, he can teach her to tame as many as she’d like. He leaves early - to surprise his sister he leaves before anyone wakes up - and when he comes back in the evening (with more fish caught than he can count) she first hugs him so hard that they both fall to the ground, then finds out she isn’t good enough a waterbender to soak him on purpose and settles for a kick to the shins. Lying there in the snow, Sokka can’t help but think that next time, he would tell his parents of his plan.
The next day she gets the best present ever and spends the next weeks sledding non-stop. He had caught hundreds of fish and she uses them all. (Except one. That one is a rotting cadaver before the next full moon, but she’s vowed to keep it forever.)
Sokka is nine and his mom just died. He is sitting by the fire, mumbling the stories his mom used to tell, trying to capture her tone, her own smart remarks about the plot, her. He has gotten stuck, not for the first time, but it is the first time there is a helpful voice to say “He attacked the serpent bear with the spear from Master Kahl.” in just the right tone. He quickly turns around, part of him hoping it would be her, but convinces himself no part of him was disappointed to see Katara, laundry in her arms.
Katara is twelve and she is tired. She has been acting as Sokka’s Mom for years and now that Dad is planning to fight in the war and Sokka wants to join him, she wonders if she has to take Dad’s place as well. As she looks into the pot of stew she’s working on, she’s surprised twice; first by tears on her cheeks that she quickly dries, then by a hug from behind by her brother.
Katara is fourteen and Sokka is fifteen. She wants to go with on his fishing trip, and while he accepts, they end up capsizing. While they’re arguing about whose fault everything is, she ends up exploding a freaking iceberg.
Years later, he’ll look back and be happy they found the Avatar, but damn she was annoying.
