Clever rabbits

Our rabbits have been on a diet for the past 3 months or so, at the advice of our vet. Fiver's digestive system kept breaking down, and he was overweight, both of which seemingly has been solved by switching to an all-hay (and grass), no-pellet diet. It's fairly amazing, really. As a result of the diet change, the rabbits are hungry pretty much all the time, and go through amazing quantities of hay.

Until yesterday. Normally, we feed them in the morning, the afternoon, and the evening. They're always out of hay at those times, until yesterday morning - they still had plenty of hay, and weren't interested in any more (offered in the hopes that the old hay might just be stale). They continued to be generally uninterested for the rest of the day, with their hay supply diminishing only slightly by the day's end. Still interested in banana chips, and the fattier alfalfa hay, but very worrisome anyway. Not eating is Bad News in rabbit world.

This morning, still not much change. I peered despairingly at the pile of hay still on their shelf, and the seemingly content rabbits just stared back. And then I noticed the hole in the garbage bag that was sitting on top of their cage. The garbage bag I'd been using to collect scattered hay from around the cage. The garbage bag that I finally tossed the old bag of rabbit food pellets into on Saturday, since we clearly have no need for it anymore - now with a hole in the bottom.

Our rabbits are way too clever. And are going to be sorely disappointed when they realize I've taken away their secret stash.
