i read the exorcist when i was about 19 and still living in mt helena. everyone else had gone out, it was a warm and balmy summer night, so all the doors were open in the house to let the breeze through. i turned off all the lights except for the one in my room and started reading it. at first it was kind of creepy, very atmospheric and becuase of the movie you knew what was coming. the more i read the harder it was to put down. not just because it was riveting, but because it really was creepy. the wind was howling in the trees outside, and by 2 in the morning i was too frightened to turn off the light and go to sleep. Then a smell started wafting into my room, a pungent thick smell, like rotting prawns that you could taste at the back of your throat. it was fucked up because in the book its a demon of sickness that causes all the problems, and now the smell of vomit was filling my cramped little room. i had to keep reading, praying for daylight and the end of the book when everything would turn out ok.
my parents came home just after sunrise to a bleary eyed me in foetal position on my bed wondering why i hadn't cleaned up my brothers old and senile dogs spew.
i just pointed to the exorcist and said "only took me one night to read"

yea, its pretty good, but maybe i was just in the right frame of mind. i liked it quite a bit more than the movie, the movie really just summarised the book with shoddy 70's special effects. If i'd read the book and never seen the movie i think it'd have been a lot better.

you want to go see hannibal some time soon?
