I've been thinking about religious beliefs lately and I suppose this is how I'd characterize mine ( Read more... )

William Gibson put it well in his book Count Zero, one of the characters, a Loa was discussing some of the differences between Vodou and more archetypal religions. They said, in reference to what I have surmised to be some kind of Vodou creation deity (I am unschooled in the subject) "too big and too far away to care whether or not you're getting laid." It is a little low-brown in terms of vernacular but the point is fairly clear that this powerful being has much better things to concern themselves with than any individuals welfare.

Much of your beliefs actually parallel my own. I am unsure whether or not a bearded man named Jesus actually existed, and I am uninterested in being certain one way or another. I think that to concentrate on something so frivelous, when the matter of importance is the system of ideas that the character of Jesus has come to represent, is folly.

I do not believe there is a God per se, I am open to the possibility that there may be a similar thing, but I also consider such matters beyond my concern or understanding as my reality is here, on earth. Not in some heavenly meta-cosmos.

Also, I am obstinate in my refusal to believe that such a thing is at all anthropomorphic in any way. Further, I assert that such a thing is not to be found in books and buildings, rather when I feel "God" it is in the the form of the subtle and curious pulse or tingle that one feels in a grove of trees and not a constructed or lifeless place such as a church or pile of rocks. Science tells me that this is only the natural electromagnetic radiance of all living things and maybe that is so. However, I do not know the origin of electromagnetic fields, nor does anyone else as far as I know. It is said that electromagnetic fields are produced but I have not come across anything indicating why or how or any specific origin aside from interactions of similarly nebulous devices.
