Rand's writing style

I've been reading "Crime and Punishment" this week. I've been having a negative reaction to the whole thing, but one thing I've noticed is that it's holding me even though the plot is not interesting, the philosophical issues are puerile, the dialog is stiff, and it has other negatives I could recite if I were of a mind ( Read more... )

I myself tried reading Crime and Punishment, didn't make it too far damn library renewal system, but I became a little unnerved by the self-loathing and self-deprication exhibited by the ex-gov. employee who prostitutes his daughter and goes on week long benders. I always thought i saw enough of that in real life and don't neccesarily like to be reminded of such levels in books. hmph.

p.s. just saw your posts in an ayn rand comm. and thought i'd reply. sorry for the inconvenience.

sorry for the previous post, i got a bit sidetracked. what i meant to say that is that in if rand's theory on writing was plot, plot, plot, then i'd have to say that she got a bit off course in Atlas Shrugged. I'm progressing rather sluggishly through it because I feel it's a little overencumbered by her theories. Not to say that's a bad thing, because they're quite interesting, but she seems to be contradicting herself a bit there. I really enjoy her work but AS is starting to grind on me because I feel slightly weighed down by materialism(which is subject to a whole nother can of bees.)

This is interesting to me. To be honest, I've always wondered how someone could read Atlas and not be bowled over. So I hope you'll tell me more about why you don't like it. You say she contradicts herself. Could you be more specific? You feel "weighed down by materialism". Could you expand on that?

I don't want to argue, really. I want to see how your mind is interacting with the book. I know how the minds of people like me interact. I would like to get info on those whose mind is not like mine.

Thanks

Well let me first say that upon my reading of "The Fountainhead" I was bolwed over, even though it took me a little while to be able to synthesize my thoughts on the book. It was a quite a shock to read something of that nature and have it shake you like it did me ( ... )
