One cat or two?

This is largely for those of you with cat experience:

I've been struggling with the decision of whether we should get one cat or two. Our place seems like it might be a little small for two cats, and they would be more expensive to care for than one. But one cat (or kitten) might get bored and lonely while we're both away at work.

Thoughts?

Cats are naturally social creatures. All it takes is a look at the larger cats in the wild to appreciate the sentiment. It's no different with our household feline friends, but in many ways we, the humans, take the place of their "cat families." We're often viewed as the alpha cats and are treated as such.

They're not pack animals in the traditional sense -- they rarely hunt together (rare exceptions being lions and some others), but they form strong bonds with other cats in a way that's more analogous to people.

Everything I've ever heard and read about keeping cats as pets is that multiple cats are better than one, precisely for the reason that they will keep each other entertained and from becoming too restless. They will probably still want your attention when you come home, but that's only because you're the big cat and your praise and attention is *awesome*.

I never have to worry about my cats being bored or upset or moody or alone because they have each other at home when Mike and I aren't there. The same held true when they were in L.A.

If you're going to get one cat, I would suggest a female cat, since they tend to be less socially inclined, on average. This isn't to say female cats are bad or unfriendly, only that she will likely be able to enjoy long periods alone better than a lone male cat. Males tend to be friendlier and more naturally social, so if you want two cats I suggest at least one of them be male. This is just the average, of course. As you may know, my Jack-cat isn't the most outgoing creature, but once he warms up to you, he wants to be scritched, flipped over, stepped on (lightly!), etc.

Also, YAY CATS!

Too long; didn't read: Cats are social creatures. Two probably better than one for cats' sake. If one cat, go with a female. Have fun. \o/
