It's pretty well known that etc. is from the latin et cetera or, "and the rest," but I can't believe that I never knew/noticed that "i.e." is id est, "that is," or that ibid is of course from ibidus, meaning like, "in the same place." How unobservant of me as a student of Latin! I take all our little grammatical abbreviations for granted without considering that I'm really using Latin more often than I think!
