To start off, if anyone read my text from Casey post earlier, and subsequently vomited, I apologize; I forgot to mark it as private. I am well aware that such mushy messages are too gag-tastic for the general public, and I will do my best to keep that from happening again.
Anyway, the history party the other night was FANTASTIC. I am so excited I went. I caught a ride with Kendra and Robert, and we went over to Andrew's place over on Connecticut Street. There were tons of people from the Department there, mostly medievalists and Byzantinists, but a few american people here and there as well. I am so surprised Sarah and Andrew's kids slept through our loud conversing and mingling. There were fantastic snacks - Andrew was right about Sarah's cooking - I particularly liked the spinach dip (it reminded me of the batch Julia and I made long ago) and the fudge cookies with toffee. Yummo. I especially enjoyed talking to her - she's very sweet and was wearing a top I almost bought at Ann Taylor. I am still a little sad I didn't take photos at the party. I have no photos of my new friends and colleagues! Perhaps I will Monday, in the comfort of my own home, when they're over for movie night (yay for no class on MLK day! This is so weird getting holidays off after we got none of that at Cornell!). There was SO much good mingling and conversation. I spent a bit chatting with my ride buddies and Adam, then Frank over some chex mix, then Sarah and Kendra for awhile in the hall, then later in the kitchen with Luke, his girlfriend Debbie, Patrick and his lady friend... it was great! Casey joined us after rehearsal (because the invite said to bring your counterparts) and as the evening got later and people started heading out, it was just me, Casey, Kendra, Robert, Koen, Frank, Andrew, and his wife Sarah. I worried we were just hanging around too late, but he told us not to feel like we had to leave, and we all just stayed chatting about history and academia and life and such until like 1am. I was especially pleased to hear Andrew had a positive hand in helping Damien structure my Medieval Spain class, and that he also felt overwhelmed when he started grad school by all the work. It was really nice to see everyone outside of a classroom setting, especially now that we've really all gotten comfortable with each other (unlike at the BBQ at the beginning of the year). It was such a relaxing enjoyable way to spend a night, and start a weekend.
Ok - Chicken wings and Iron Man with my Casey! More updating later!
