ELIZABETH IS AMAZING. I love that movie so so so much, and I especially love watching it with Dan and talking about history while we do. What a rewarding and fun experience. I love the actors in it. All of them! I wish Joseph Fiennes was in more stuff that involved him being a renaissance lover.
I love the sonnet from the boat scene; it's a love poem of an Acadian woman to her lover, written by Sir Philip Sydney. I think it is very touching and (unlike the love poetry in Tristan and Isolde) very apropos given the period and especially the author:
My true love hath my heart, and I have his,
By just exchange, one for the other given.
I hold his dear, and mine he cannot miss,
There never was a better bargain driven.
His heart in me keeps me and him in one,
My heart in him his thoughts and senses guides;
He loves my heart, for once it was his own,
I cherish his, because in me it bides.
His heart his wound received from my sight,
My heart was wounded with his wounded heart;
For as from me on him his hurt did light,
So still methought in me his hurt did smart.
Both equal hurt, in this change sought our bliss;
My true love hath my heart and I have his.
It's just very nice, and lovely.
Thoughtful love poetry aside,
... isn't Joseph Fiennes delicious?
