Saturday night Casey and I watched Lady in the Water. It was unfortunately scratched so we missed a few scenes. Oh well, we still understood it because we'd seen it before. Pre-viewed DVDs, while cheap, are always a gamble. I don't care what anyone says, I frickin LOVE that movie. You have to just totally suspend reality and get caught up in it, and then it's just fun. We ate that stupid turtle cookie thing despite the trans fat, and felt quite sick after about half of it. Too rich, blech.
Today! Today Casey went to History of Theatre lecture in the library, and I grabbed a few more sources that look very helpful. This week I need to write my damned personal statement and start crackin into all the research that's new to me since I last worked on this topic (aka most of it; this paper will be way less science-oriented as it is a history medieval studies project). I really have to cut myself off on finding more sources... But it's so fun! I'm worried that in my academic career, all I do is rely heavily on my amazing ability to find every important resource on a topic, and don't pursue my on thesis as much as I should. Hm.
After a trip to the magical library, we relaxed, and eventually grabbed Bryce so the boys could buy season tickets to Hawkeye basketball. I want to go so bad; basketball is a sport I actually enjoy, intricately understand, and care about! That's what happens when you grow up in the era of "repeat the three-peat!" in Illinois. We grabbed lunch to go at Hungry Hobo (way way superior to Subway or Jimmy Johns) and dropped Bryce off for Cambus.
Then unfortunately, Casey and I got into one of the biggest arguments of our entire relationship over stupid things like whether or not Iowa should allow smoking in bars, hotels, and restaurants; whether or not Iowa City should pass the new law about not letting 19-year-olds in the bars after a certain hour, and whether or not Big Tobacco should be taken down. It was the most absurd argument, and we got really pissed at one another about things that don't actually affect us at all, aka smoking and underage drinking. It was stupid. But we made up before he had to take me to MV, and I still love him.
Spent a lot of time at a dinner swing meeting that went too long. I was annoyed by the meeting (ugh I hate savoy, and Bryon), but enjoyed talking to Jeanna afterwards. She is my go-to gal for sure. So sweet.
Also went to Dark Purple, (I love that there's so much Candy in the PAAC office) and I'm pumped for Price is Right this weekend. It's just so much fun! Can't wait to make the big check again. Good times.
Now, I'm here wasting time until bed. Tomorrow, on my list of tuesday things to do, is to get a serious start on my personal statement, finish my recommendation folders, get ahold of Lisa Green-Douglass somehow, and decide whether or not I'm going to write that Letter to the Editor to the Cornellian.
You see, at the culture show, Stand Tall put on a performance that was definitely in poor taste, if not just downright offensive. In the middle of a show that is a celebration of various cultures and includes a demonstration of a Jewish Shabbat Family Ritual, a Dakota healing dance, and a reading of a beautiful Arabic poem commending those who have memorized the Koran, they come out and perform a skit whose main point is - "It doesn't matter how you were raised, what you learned in school, what your mother taught you, what her mother taught her, or what you personally have decided is right for you, there is only ONE religious truth, and everyone else is wrong." It was a skit in which the people who you're supposed to laugh at are the person who learned about religion in college, the person who says that stating only one religious truth is closed minded, the person who learned about a lot of different religions and decided upon which was best for her, and the person who was proud of their cultural tradition. I think that covers most everyone in the audience... so they openly ridiculed a lot of people and a lot of religions. I felt offended even as a Christian that this is what was being presented, and just as a regular person, and I was pretty embarrassed for them while shocked that they had the gall to say that in front of everyone at the culture show. So I'm considering writing a letter to the editor for the opinions section... but idk yet. Maybe I'll work with Dan. He was offended.
