Summary: Inspired by a picture. Set in R&R universe, but you don't need to know the story for this. In 2050 Ennis and Jack are going on eighty and can look back on a lifetime spent together. On this specific day they are enjoying some quiet time on their porch before going to a wedding. Two versions of the same day.
A/N: under the cut

A/N: There are some names mentioned which you don't know. It doesn't matter who they are, and not all will make an appearance in future R&R chapters. But for the curious I'll give away one of them: Mickey is Audra's daughter and today is her wedding day.
I came across this image by chance somewhere on the internet, but I can't remember where. Thus I can't give credit, sorry.
Ennis and Jack in 2050
Version one
Jack: “En?”
Jack: “Ennis!”
Ennis: “Hunh?”
Jack: “Forgot to put on your hearing aids again?”
Ennis: “Nah, didn't forget. Still hear everything I need to hear.”
Jack: “You mean everything you want to hear.”
Ennis: * grunts *
Jack: “You need to get going and change into your new suit. Dan will be here in half an hour to pick us up for the wedding. And put the hearing aids on.”
Ennis: * grumbles something unintelligible *
Jack: “Don't be like that. It's Mickey's big day!”
Ennis: “Her third big day.”
Jack: “This time it's gonna last. Joseph is the right one. He's a responsible, honest man. You like him, don't you?”
Ennis: “Sure. But I didn't see anything wrong with her second husband either.”
Jack: “Well, they just became estranged. It happens.”
Ennis: “Still don't see the need for three husbands. One's enough, if you ask me.”
Jack: “When you're lucky and it's the right one on first try, then yes. You won't get any argument from me 'bout this.”
Ennis: “We were two lucky bastards, eh?”
Jack: “Are. We are some lucky bastards, babe.”
Ennis: “What?”
Jack: “Put your damned hearing aids on!”
Ennis: “You continue to yell at me, I'm gonna take back the lucky part”
Jack: “Bite me.”
Ennis: “I heard that.”
They still laugh when Ennis finally struggles out of the rocking chair. The old bones crack, arthritis bothering them both, but he still bends down to kiss Jack on the mouth before heading inside.

Version two
Jack: “En?”
Jack: “Ennis!”
Ennis: “Hunh?”
Jack: “Did we forget your hearing aids this morning?”
Ennis: “Don't need them. I can hear good enough.”
Jack: “You mean you can hear everything you want to hear.”
Ennis: * grunts *
Jack: “You need to change into your new suit, Dan will be here soon. Don't want to be late for Mickey's wedding.”
Ennis: * grumbles something unintelligible *

Ennis: “What?”
Jack: “Put your hearing aids on!”
Ennis: “Yeah, I gotta change anyway. Wonder what's up today. Hope we don't go to the doctors again. I hate seeing the doctors.”
Jack: “No, En. No doctors. We're going to Mickey's wedding, it's today.”
Ennis: “I know that today is Mickey's wedding. We just talked about it, I ain't stupid. You said Jason's gonna pick us up and then we're going to ... we're going to … Where the hell has he been anyway? I haven't seen Jason in ages.”
Jack: “C'mon, I'll go inside with you.”
Ennis: “Would it kill you to speak a little louder and tell me what's up with Jason? Goddamnit!”
Jack: “I'm sorry, babe.”
Jack extended his hand and ran a thumb over the cheek of the person he loved more than anything in the world.
They had buried Jason two years ago.
