On Saturday, Ennis and Jack went to the surf contest they had talked about. Ennis was in awe of the skills of the competitors and enjoyed the whole atmosphere. Jack was known all over the place, which didn't exactly come as a surprise.
Ennis had brought his camera and put it to good use. In the evening he was surprised he had taken almost a hundred pictures. Jack loaded them up on his computer so they could watch them together.
"Come here, give me a kiss.“ Jack said, camera in hand, pointing at themselves.
They leaned in and Jack snapped a picture, which only showed their hair. The next ones weren't better, he always cut a part off.
“I believe you're doing it on purpose to get more kisses out of me, dude. Give me the camera.“
“Nope. Get your fingers off the cam -

“One more, then I get the camera.“
“Three more.“

“That one doesn't count, we weren't kissing.“

“Stop laughing, I can't kiss and laugh at the same time.“
But it was long too late. They ended up giggling like blazes and it took them a good while to finally get the photo they wanted. Yet after uploading them, they both agreed that the one were they were laughing directly at each others face was their favorite. And nothing was cut off.
On Sunday they were invited to BBQ at Paul's home. Jack was making a huge bowl of coleslaw in his kitchen, which Ennis rated as horrible and started to tamper with. “I bet you can't cook worth a damn.“
“Yep. But I'm pretty good with the microwave.“ Jack replied, which got him a snort from Ennis.
“Okay, try the coleslaw now.“ he said after adding several ingredients from Jack's fridge and spice rack.
“Wow, that's indeed better. Can you really cook?“
Ennis shrugged. “Some. How many people will be there? Judging from the bowl size, you plan to feed an army.“
“Let me count: Paolo's four, we six, Audra and Togo eight, Sam nine and Jocelyn makes ten. Plus my brother and family, as you already know. Fourteen altogether.“
“Mh.“
“Is it really okay? We don't have to go there, we can do something else.“
"Nah, it's okay.“
“Uncle Jackie! Uncle Jackie!“ Two little girls came running towards them as soon as they approached the house. It was a typical house in the suburbs, with front lawn and a garage attached to the right. Only the front porch stood out, it was painted in a mismatching and much too bright fuchsia pink.
“Hey, here are my favorite girls!“
The smaller girl already tried to climb on Jack's lap, not quite succeeding with her short chubby legs. Jack picked her up and helped her.
"You're so mean, Maria.“ the older girl protested „I wanted first.“
“Me faster.“ Maria stuck her tongue out to her older sister.
“Hush now, girls, there's enough time for both of you to get a ride.“ Jack told Carla. “But first say hi to Ennis, he's a good friend of mine.“
“Hi Ennis.“ came in two voices.
„Hi. You must be Carla, and you Maria, right?“
The two nodded at him.
“Where are your mom and dad? Already in the backyard?“ Jack asked the girls.
"Yes.“
“Then let's go.“ Jack started to push the handrims fast.
“Go Uncle Jackie. Go, go, go!“ Maria squealed.
In the backyard, they were greeted by Paul, Sara and Sam, Paul's cousin.
“Hi Ennis, nice to meet you.“ Sara was a small woman, with dark hair bound to a ponytail and eyes that were almost black. “Give me that bowl, I'll put it in the fridge till we need it."
Audra, Togo and Sara's best friend Jocelyn arrived soon after. Jason and his family showed up when Paul was just about to start the grill. Ennis had been looking forward to seeing Paul, Audra and Togo, but felt a bit insecure about meeting Jack's brother.
Everything went well though; Jason and especially his wife Hannah were eager to hear about his life in Wyoming. Hannah had had English riding classes as a teenager and loved horses. Soon the two were talking shop.
Jack's coleslaw got him some compliments, which he first accepted with a wide grin, until he couldn't hold it any longer and burst into laughing, telling everybody it was Ennis' work for a good deal.
“I should have known it.“ Sara rolled her eyes at Jack. “There's a reason I normally ask you to bring beverages, not food. Your coleslaw is the only acceptable food you ever brought, it's not bad. But this“ she pointed with her fork to the bowl “is a world of difference. And you“ now the fork pointed towards Ennis “will have to give me the recipe or you'll have to make coleslaw for me till the end of your days. I dig that stuff. What did you put into it?“
Ennis blushed over the praise and told Sara what she wanted to know. It didn't take long for her to order him into her kitchen.
Sara had him repeat every step of his coleslaw receipt, while she scribbled it down. Then she slipped seamlessly into what Paul called her interrogation mode.
“So, tell me a bit about you, Ennis.“
Shit. He thought. She caught me.
“Well, there's not much to say. I'm from Riverton, Wyoming and I work on a ranch there. Guess you already know that.“
“That can't be all. You must have had a life before you met Jack.“
I'm not so sure anymore.
“Have you always lived in Riverton?“ She continued.
“No, just the last four years. Before that, I was on different ranches in Dubois, Worland and some other places.“
“What about your family? Where did you grow up?“
“In Sage. There isn't much family. My parents died long ago. I have a brother and a sister, but we don't have much contact. My sis writes Christmas cards every year.“
“Oh my god, you poor baby.“ She pulled him into a hug.
Ennis, taken aback, replied “I'm not a baby anymore and I think I'm doing pretty good.“
Sara took a step back, looked him square in the eyes and said: “No, you don't. Everybody needs a family.“
“Well, ...“ Ennis shrugged.
With the kids running around and the constant chatter of the adults, the afternoon went by fast. Audra and Togo had big news to share.
“We got news for you. We're having a baby.“
While everybody was surprised, Ennis winked at her and asked “The stomach flu from Hawaii?“
“Exactly. It didn't get better after we returned, so I went to the doc. The baby will be due end of June.“
Congratulations were delivered and many questions raised.
“Yes, it was a big surprise.“ Audra told them. “I don't know yet how it all will play out, but I want to continue my career after the baby is born. Will be difficult with all the traveling. I guess I'll just wait and see how it goes.“
After the excitement settled, it was time for Jack and Ennis to take off. They wanted some time for themselves before Ennis had to fly back the next day. In the car, they talked about their afternoon.
“Sara is a very lovely woman.“ Jack stated „ She's warmhearted and honest. She'll tell you directly to your face what she's thinking. She's a bit direct at times, but she really means well.“
“Yeah, I noticed that. She cornered me in the kitchen and asked a thousand questions.“
Jack laughed. “I thought so. Paul calls it her interrogation mode. She also has quite a temper. Did you notice the pink color on the front porch?“
“I would be blind if I hadn't noticed. Did she choose the color?“
“I wouldn't phrase it that way. It was a couple of years ago, she was livid with Paolo. She thought he had an affair. So she painted the whole porch pink. So, he was on a trip, and when he came back, everything was pink. He almost had a heart attack. Of course he hates the color, which was the whole point of it.“
“Jeez! And did he? Have an affair I mean?“
“At least it was short of it. I didn't want to know, really, since I'm friends with Paul and Sara. It was with Sue, you met her on Oahu, remember her?“
Ennis nodded.
“It didn't go well with Sara and Paolo back then, and it sure weren't Paul's finest moments.“
“Oh.” Ennis sensed there was more to the story, but didn't want to be intrusive. “Did you get your front casters fixed meanwhile? Are these the ones you wanted?” he asked instead, pointing with his thumb over his shoulder. Jack had told Ennis about the company's unsatisfying attempt to repair it after their return from Hawaii.
“Man, they needed three attempts to get it right. Can you believe it? They sent the wrong forks for the casters twice. This must not happen, and the material must not brake so easily to begin with. I mean, a wheelchair is not a bike, nobody's in it just for the fun. Being stuck somewhere because your chair brakes can be pretty scary. It wasn't that bad on Hawaii, but it was just luck that Paul was on the same trip. At least they were reasonable when I complained. Now I have two new front casters, they're a different model, I didn't want the single sided fork anymore. They also refunded the theoretical costs for a rental chair, even though I used my old one, and on top of that gave me a discount on the chair purchase, to make up for the trouble.”
“Sounds fair.”
“Yes. So I got two good things out of the matter.”
When Ennis was closing Jack's apartment door behind them, he already felt Jack's hands on his ass.
“Turn around cowboy. I couldn't wait to get my hands on you all afternoon.“
Ennis turned and let out a small sigh when Jack started to open his jeans. He stood with his back to the door, Jack's footrest pinching slightly into his shins, but he barely noticed. What Jack did to his middle region was far too capturing. His eyes became heavy-lidded and a whimper escaped his throat. Jack loved all the small noises Ennis made when he got excited. He let his hands glide upward under Ennis' shirt and used his mouth to elicit more of the beloved sounds. A tongue sliding along the length of his dick made Ennis groan, lips softly nipping the loose skin on his sack brought on a muted Mhh and for taking the head in his mouth Jack was rewarded with a surprisingly high-pitched whine.
Jack didn't really want to tease, but he couldn't resist prolonging things a little bit so he let go of Ennis' cock and blew some cold air on the wet body part, causing Ennis to suck in a hissing breath, which was quickly followed by a moan when Ennis felt the wet warmth of Jack's mouth surrounding him once again. Soon his knees began to feel like jelly and the lightheaded feeling of a building orgasm made him close his eyes, shutting the world out.
Later Ennis was watching TV while Jack was in the bathroom. He followed the second half of a Die Hard rerun, then zapped through the channels and caught the news on MSNBC. Mauna Loa on Hawaii had started to spew ash again. It had never completely stopped, but now it increased its activities once more. There weren't any airport closures yet, but the authorities expected them at the one or other point in over the next days.
When Jack was coming back from the bathroom, he wore absolutely nothing. Ennis' heart instantly started to beat faster.
"You know“ he growled „that very first day on Hawaii, when I saw you lying there at the pool, I thought you are the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. I almost didn't dare to look at you because I didn't want to stare. And right now, you're looking one missing pair of trunks better than you did then.“
Jack smiled widely. “That's the reaction I hoped for.“
“I want to make you feel really good tonight.”
“Then go for it.“
And together they did. When they went to he bedroom, Jack asked Ennis to switch on a small lamp in the far corner, only to tease him with “Last one in!” as soon as Ennis approached the lamp, while he quickly transferred on the bed.
“You cheat.” Ennis grinned.
“Nah, just creating even chances.”
“Cheat.” Ennis shook his head. “But I like the light. I want to see you tonight.”
Ennis shed the last of his clothes, then joined his lover. “I want to see this spot.” he kissed the side of Jack's rib cage where he had a mole. “And this … and this … and this.” Shoulders, chest, hips, arms, knees, down to the toes Ennis barely left an inch out but focused his attention on Jack's upper half, for it made more sense. He started sucking a finger on Jack's left hand then slowly and deliberately licked a trail on the inside of his arm, tickling the inner side of the elbow, burying his nose in the armpit and kissing the spot directly under it, where the hair faded. Somewhere on the path his mouth took on Jack's body Ennis started humming without noticing how much his sounds mirrored Jack's.
“Sit back.” Jack whispered “Let me come up there to you.”
They sat face to face, legs and arms wrapped around each other. For a moment each put their face in the crook of the other's neck doing nothing but bathing in the intimate feel of skin to skin contact and inhaling the other's scent.
Ennis started to nip on Jack's skin right there, causing Jack to bend his head even further, giving Ennis better access.
“Mmh, you taste so good.” Ennis sighed and finally they kissed. Slowly and leisurely, no need to rush. Ennis felt relaxed as rarely ever, Jack's hands roamed over Ennis' back, fingertips drawing long lines from neck to tailbone and a little further.
“My leg is getting all jittery.” Jack commented.
“I know.” Jack's left leg was tapping at Ennis' backside in a staccato rhythm as a reaction to being bent at an angle. “Bothering you?” Ennis asked.
“No, not right now. You?”
“No. Leave it be. Feels like a washing machine on spin cycle.”
“Have experience with that? Washing machine sex?”
Ennis shook his head “Not at all.” he chuckled “Just thought so.”
Jack blew ever so slightly in Ennis' ear, sending shivers through his whole body and this time it was Ennis who bend his head backward as far as it would go, arching his chest and throat, feeling Jack's lips on the presented body parts. He groaned and brought his head back up to mirror the activity on Jack's body. It didn't miss the desired effect and had Jack moaning with pleasure just the same. Ennis never paused using his tongue and lips while he brought his hand near Jack's dick, stroking the inside of his thighs where he knew Jack had good sensation. “This is really good.” he heard Jack murmur and was surprised to feel a rock-hard erection when he had barely touched Jack's cock."Where did that come from so quickly?” he asked without braking the contact. “Pfizer company, I took a Viagra earlier.” Jack replied without opening his eyes, his voice still leisurely relaxed.
“What? Why?”
“Course we didn't have much luck last night.” Jack now opened his eyes “I wanted to give you something to remember me by, I want to make you feel really good tonight, you're not the only one with the thought.”
“I don't remember you by the degree your dick cooperates or not, babe.” Ennis drew a line along the side of Jack's face with a single finger.
Jack smiled “I know, it was just a figure of speech. But it's nice of you to say nonetheless, babe.” he put a slight emphasis on the endearment, signaling he had noticed its use, then asked “Now shall we put this beautiful, big boner to good use?”
“You bet.”
The next morning, Ennis switched on the kitchen radio while he was making french toast and Jack was getting the coffee maker ready. In a few hours, Jack would have to drive Ennis to the airport. The radio announced that all Hawaiian airports would close by 4PM.
“You're going back to Oahu directly after Thanksgiving, aren't you?“
“That's the plan. I'll fly out on Friday after Thanksgiving and be back on December 21st. That is, if Mauna Loa settles down.“
“French toast is ready.“ Ennis announced without taking his eyes from the pan.
“Just getting the syrup.”
“Coffee ready?”
"On the table.”
“Here we go.” Ennis piled the French toast on a big plate and set it in the middle before sitting across from Jack.
“You really can cook, the french toast is delicious.“
“Dude, it's only french toast. Everybody can make it.“
“But mine doesn't taste as good.“
“I'll give you some cooking lessons next time I'm coming.“
They looked at each other, their smiles faded and Ennis muttered what both were thinking “Next year.“
Something shifted right at that moment, when the awareness of the weeks ahead, that would pass without the possibility to see each other, settled fully in. It was the difference between spending vacation time together and becoming a real couple, between having a good time without further strings and including the other in your regular life. It was a commitment that was neither fully fathomed to its whole extent nor spoken aloud, but felt by both of them. A commitment that held the promise for a future, but also the peril of vulnerability.
“Yeah, next year ... I'm gonna miss you, En.“
“I'm gonna miss you too, Bud.
Jack took Ennis' hand and started to play with his fingers.
Ennis spoke quietly: “I'm sorry I can't come over for Christmas. You know I already agreed to work through Christmas and the whole week after, through New Year's. I was always the one with no family, so I didn't mind. It's a quiet time on the ranch and I've always liked it. This year, I wish I wouldn't have to work.“
“It's all right, friend.“
“I'll be here first week in January, promise. I always have a free week after working ten or twelve days straight through, mostly with double shifts.“
Jack raised his coffee mug “On January then!“
“On January!“
