Title: The Word is...
Author:
Pairing: Characters: Jeff Gordon and OC named Rainita Dunross
Rating: I always err on the side of more and I haven't finished them so NC-17
Prompt:
Word Count: 100 as requested
Author's note/Disclaimer: The idea for this came out as an AU of a story I'm writing in my lj. The theme is not typical for Nascar-witchcraft as is practiced in the 21st century (more or less). I hope you enjoy and feedback is always welcome.
20. The Word Is…Zero
Word Count 100
“You know policy; zero tolerance,” Rick said. “Finish the year. I’m through with you.” He walked away.
Kyle looked up to see Rain gazing at him. “Your fault,” he snapped, striding toward her. “You fucked up my life!”
“No, you did,” she answered. “I’m sorry it’s too late to save you.”
“Too late for him,” Kyle sneered in a voice none knew except two. Kyle leaned in closer. “When he dies he’s mine,” he hissed then rushed out of the garage.
“Did he threaten Jeff’s life?” Chad asked.
She nodded. “I hate this part.”
Chad swore softly, shaking his head.
The Word Is…Ice
Word Count 100
“Rain? Rain, wake up.” Chad anxiously touched her shoulder as she napped on the couch in their motorcoach. She opened her eyes. “There’s been an accident.”
She sat up. “He’s dead.” Chad nodded. “He was cold, Chad, like ice.”
“You saw it? Him?” She nodded, moving to leave. “Where are you going?”
“To be certain he doesn’t do any more damage.” She opened the door.
“He’s dead,” Chad protested as he followed her; closed the door.
“Dead doesn’t mean powerless,” she answered.
“You knew this was going to happen.” His voice broke on the last old word.
Rain nodded, shivering.
22. The Word Is… Goodbye
Word Count: 100
Jeff knelt beside the marble stone.
“I’m sorry it was you,” he whispered. “I would’ve given anything to save you. If I’d known it had to be one of us, I would’ve gone with her gladly to save you.”
“You can’t save everyone,” Rainita said softly, crouching beside him. “Trust me there.”
He sighed; raised his head to focus on her. “He was too young to know.”
“You didn’t know.” She shrugged then stood. “Leave the dead to the dead, Jeff.”
“Goodbye,” he whispered then struggled to his feet. She steadied him. “I trusted him.”
“We all did,” she sighed.
23. The Word Is… X-rated
Word Count: 100
There’s something I have to know,” Jeff said as Rain drove away from the cemetery. She nodded. “How’d you know it was him, not Kyle?”
“When he learned about me, he gave me an x-rated description of a Beltane ritual.” Jeff shrugged; she smiled. “That’s not a public thing, members only.”
“But how’d you know he was… behind it?” he asked.
“Leave me a few secrets,” she chuckled. “You’ll learn as you study.”
“So Kyle’s safe?” he asked.
“That’s your job,” she replied, smiling
“I’m not ready!” he gasped.
“Neither was I. The rewards are worth the trouble,” she chuckled.
#24. The Word Is… Winter
Word Count: 100
Winter came to Nascar; that month when everyone pretends not to think about cars, competition. For some it’s easy; put their feet up on the porch rail, drink beer. For others, this year’s was spent thinking about mistakes made, lives lost. Especially the one lost nobody knew how long ago before the failure of a fuel pump led to his fiery death in Kansas. Most people who’d known him, including family, accepted the stammered “no real explanation”. But four knew the truth: Shadow had taken it’s price in blood. They sacrificed one brother to save the other. Life goes on.
#25. The Word Is…Yes
Word Count: 100
Rainita looked up from her paperwork as someone rapped on the doorframe. She smiled as Jeff walked in, carrying Ella in his arms.
“Thought you’d like to see what it’s worth,” he quipped, crossing the room.
“She’s beautiful.” She gently took the infant, smiled down at her. “Was it really?”
He perched on the edge of the desk. “I don’t know that I’d be where I am today without all that, but yes, it was worth it. May Kurt forgive me.”
“In some cultures they say ones who die unhappy come back quickly,” Rain teased.
Jeff laughed, nodding. “Blessed be.”
26. The Word Is…Over
Word Count: 100
Kyle dropped onto the sand beside Rainita, wrapped his arms around his knees. “Who passed this to you?” he asked.
“My mother before she died,” she answered. “I didn’t have a choice, Kyle.”
He nodded, staring at the water. “I know. I’m glad to be alive. I wish there’d been a way to save him, too.” She rested a hand on his forearm. “I’m not sorry you saved me. I don’t know if I can be this… a soul-saver.” She squeezed his arm. “When will it be over?”
“When one team stands before Shadow and proves it’s possible,” she replied.
That was more challenging and more fun than I thought it would be. I hope you got some enjoyment also.
