Chapter 10: Beneath the past
Several years ago, there was a rich man and his wife. The man was the only heir of a successful company which was established by his late father. Despite surrounded by negative influencers who were also the heir of the company directors, the man still found a way to survive. He was well-loved and respected by his subordinates since he was humble enough to directly interact with them and care a lot of with their welfare.
Yet, above all, the man loved his wife very much. He would do anything he can just to spend more time with her even if he needed to work like a mule so he can return home early. She was the only person who understood him and would be there when things were getting too overwhelmed to bear. They lived happily every day and even blessed when the doctor announced that the wife was pregnant two years later. The man - who was very excited with their expecting first child - took care for his wife even better from that day and tried to handle all the house chores himself so his beloved wife can rest reassure. They were very excited with the idea of growing their child together that they spent their time a lot reading parenting magazines and listening to talks so they can prepare themselves with the needed knowledge. By the following month, they even had finished buying and decorating a cute small room for their baby boy that they agreed to name Sho.
However, things then suddenly started to go downhill. 3 months before the expected childbirth day, the doctor noticed something wasn’t right with the wife’s condition. After doing some check-up, she found out that the man’s wife wasn’t actually strong enough to give birth or complication might happen if they proceed. That broke the man’s heart as he was left to choose either to save their baby or the mother. He cried every day and night to himself as he watched his wife got weaker and weaker until he eventually determined to save his wife at any cost. Yet, the brave wife didn’t let him when she found out. She persuaded him to let the innocent baby to live instead since that is the proof of their love. The man who was devastated by her decision became even brokenhearted when heard that as he cried in her embrace while she reassuringly said it was because this was their first and maybe only child after all.
When the expected day finally came, the man never let go of her hand as he watched the painful process his wife had to through. Tears made its way down when he finally greeted by their baby’s cry before the doctor let them hold the healthy, cute little wonder. The couple shared their joy for the first time after months of sadness and promised that they will give the child as much happiness as they can. It was a year later - two months after their beloved baby’s birthday - the affect finally fully took over the wife’s body. The man just tearfully watched as his beloved woman died on the hospital bed, his hand held hers tight for the whole time while his other arm was carrying their son who still couldn’t understand a thing at that time.
Starting from that day, the man’s days turned to monochrome. He still laughed and spent time with his son when he wasn’t working, but it wasn’t longer same as when his late wife was still alive. Every time he returned home, he often stared at a far distance while remembering all the happy memories that he had created with his late wife together.
Two years after the loss, his company organized a huge party to celebrate their new partners. Among the invited guests, there was one lady who managed to grab his attention once he heard that she has a good reputation for being the only woman who can beat other male professionals in the accountancy league. Seeing how outspoken and confident the lady was intrigued him until he scouted her to work with them on the spot. Later, he found out that she was actually connected with him in one aspect - that both of them being a single parent. He instantly fell in love with the lady’s son as well who was named Satoshi, what more when witnessed that the boy can get along very well with his son. It didn’t take long before he proposed her and they both was united in a beautiful wedding. Everything seemed to fall into place again after that as they lived happily and lovingly together like how a real family should be. He also taught the interested Satoshi about art, something that he nearly forgot he was passionate about after he had to step up as their family’s company leader. Things got even better when he found that his wife was pregnant and hyped it up together with the other two sons.
…Or that was what he thought. Half a year after the new baby named Masaki was born, he uncovered an ugly truth. That broke his last string as he chased the woman out of their house and company with a warning to not show her face near them anymore. Unable to understand a single thing however, the children cried every day due to the sudden loss of their mother. The man at the same time started to spend more and more hours on his job or associated with the company’s matters. He indeed still hadn’t lost his workers’ respect since he still cared a lot about them, but things got worsened at home. There were times when he didn’t see his children for 3 days in a row since he would return home late and left early by the next morning.
Yet, it wasn’t until around 4 months later when he decided to properly greet them that he finally knew how terrible their family situation was. As soon as he tried to approach his sons with his newly bought toys, he was surprised to see the fear on their face as all of them then suddenly cried aloud and ran to find their nanny. He tried to fix their relationship by spending more time again at home, but the mistrust was clear since the brothers preferred more to play among themselves. Even the young Sho knew how to pamper the crying little Masaki better than himself. Totally frustrated by the entire situation, the man desperately looked for a way. Later he noticed the emptiness that actually present in their eyes and decided to remarry.
For a while, after the marriage, things finally returned to how he knew it supposed to be. He found a lovely wife who saw his children as hers, patched up with the three brothers again, and later blessed with the birth of another two baby boy - Kazunari and Jun. They also hang out a lot, went for vacations, and spent nice time together just like one good, happy family.
Except…that actually wasn’t the real happiness he wanted. Bit by bit he began to spend longer hours with work or his clients. He didn’t know when he started to drown in alcohol and searched for young, pretty girls to spend a night with until it became a habit. The other partners who wanted to steal his position tried to bury him down by using that reason, but as long as he could perform splendidly in his job, he knew they couldn’t do anything much. Meanwhile, fights also erupted more and more between him and his wife in the house until 3 years later, she left the house without any notice. That became the breaking point for his sons as they started to drift themselves away from him while he himself didn’t care to fix what had long broken between them anymore…

“Thi-s is the pla-ce. I met Ma-sak-i he-re.”
Kazu just nods with his jaw hang open as they stare at the dark bakery in front. After searching for more than half a day without having a single clue from where to begin, they finally found this place. Unfortunately, the two of them arrive a bit too late since the bakery already stops operating just like the other shops around there by the time the taxi they rode stops in front of it. As the younger brother considers the idea of finding a hotel to stay in the nearby district which is probably much safer, Satoshi suddenly taps his arm and points at a dim alley not far from there.
“Ma-sa-ki’s hou-se is ove-r the-re.”
Kazu immediately widens his eyes due to shock before turning to the older brother again. After all, the alley does look too scary to walk in while the fact that they are in a dangerous area will definitely not help the situation at all. However, before he can say a word, Satoshi already walk ahead of him. That leaves the younger man to no other option, but to follow the older man while praying that nothing will go wrong along the way.
As they continue to walk deeper into the area, they fortunately don’t encounter anything weird except for a drunken man who is sitting half-unconscious in the dimness. Both men are quiet as they keep on moving with Kazu letting the older man to lead the way until they heard sound of people are shouting in angry tone to each other come from the road in front. Alerted, he quickly pulls his brother to stay behind and peek from the corner to see what is going on. How shocked he is however when see there are two groups of men with their gangster-like outfits are standing not afar from there, complete with their iron pipe, baseball bats, knife, and more. Satoshi himself already shaking as he follows his brother to watch from their hiding place and returns Kazu’s worried look with scared one. Before the younger man can say a word though, they are surprised by one of the man’s angry scream as he throws something to the ground.
“YOU MOTHER*CKER DARE TO GIVE US THIS SH*T AFTER TAKING THAT MUCH MONEY??? ARE YOU F*CKING KIDDING US???”
The rage sends shiver along the brothers’ spine. That is when Kazu accidentally drops his gaze to the thing that the previous man threw and recognizes the packets of white powder. Realizing that they are now probably watching some drugs-dealing-goes-wrong, he knows they have to get out of there faster before things become even worst. Yet, right when he just reaches for Satoshi's hand, one of the gang members notices their existence.
“WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING AT, MOTHER*CKERS!” gasping once see the man is pointing at them, Kazu hurriedly pull his brother with him to get away from there. Luck unfortunately isn't on their side when those people already come to chase after them while screaming that they will beat the hell out of them. That warning makes the fourth brother has his stomach scrunched due to fear, what more when he has to force his stiff legs to run as fast as he can despite years of avoiding tiring exercises. Both men are clearly panic as they desperately try to save themselves in the unknown place until a pair of hands appear out of nowhere and pull them into a dark alley. That shocked the two brothers so much, what more when they feel they are being thrown onto bags of garbage before the 'dragger' pushes two bins to block them from being seen from outside. After that the latter hurriedly follow them to hide behind it, later pushing their heads lower once see those angry men run pass the alley. The three of them then wait in silence until the gangs' footsteps can't longer be heard in the area before altogether heave their relief sighs.
“Why are you guys here?”
Both Satoshi and Kazu quickly turns to the voice owner. Their eyes immediately widen as they see the person they have been looking for nearly the entire day is now staring back at them, though with deep frown plasters on his face.
“Masak-!” Kazu doesn’t get to complete his word when the other man suddenly hushes him. Later, two shadows suddenly come from the place where the gang appears before that makes him whisper them to stay quiet. As both Satoshi and Kazu hide their head lower to avoid from being discovered, they see two men in suits appear not far from there who are looking around like they are searching for something. The two brothers immediately frown by that since they are more than sure that those two are not from the previous gang, but neither question it and just wait like Masaki told them. Soon, when nothing can longer be heard from there, the third brother immediately takes that opportunity to check if the course is clear and motion them to follow him. The journey out from there is a very nerve-wrecking one since nobody dare to say a single word until they are safe behind the locked door of Masaki’s house.
“Ma-sa-ki! We fi-nal-ly fou-nd you!”
Satoshi finally can't keep his excitement any longer and gives the younger man a bone-crushing hug as soon as Masaki turns to them. Though surprise, Masaki returns it while still staring the two men questioningly.
“What? Did you guys looking for me?”
The eldest brother just nods with a wide smile. That makes Masaki grows even more confused as he brings his gaze to Kazu for explanation. Yet, instead of answering, the younger man just chuckle it away and returns Masaki's puzzled look with a relief one.

“Please…I don’t-know how…anymore. Please…you’re the only one…”
She begs before drops her head lower, clearly in desperate situation herself as well. The sight softens Jun’s heart a bit though in the end he still can’t bring himself to comprehend with what she just told him. Sighing heavily, he closes his eyes and tries to calm himself down. After a while, he finally comes out with a decision and look at her again.
“I need some time. I’ll contact you later.
The woman chews her trembling lip to hear that, but nod nonetheless. Then, without saying anything more, the young man swiftly leaves the club and hastens his steps far from there. Just what on earth is going on with his life? This morning Satoshi and Kazu suddenly disappears and now this…?
