Chapter 8 : Beneath the darkness
Almost a week has passed since Satoshi’s disappearance incident. Both Sho and Jun start to set up curfew after that, preventing the eldest brother from going outside at all except when he is working or with them. Already traumatized by the experience himself, Satoshi doesn’t oppose the new rule much until Sho declared that Kazu will not be allowed to come any closer to him from now on as well for his carelessness. Even though the oldest among the brothers repeatedly said that it happened because of his own fault, nobody would listen. He can see how Kazu’s usually cold attitude toward him changed after his return, but now they can even hardly see each other since the fourth brother will avoid from bumping into him at home, the situation is seemingly worsen from his view. Several times he had noticed that Kazu will look like want to talk with him when they are alone, but the latter will hesitate in the end - probably due to fear of Sho’s rage. Not to mention that there is always Jun around to watch over him lately despite the youngest brother's already hectic schedule since he seems worry if the incident bound to happen again when there is nobody around.
However, that is not the only thing changes. Nowadays, he realizes that Sho will only return home after it past midnight before going back to office early on the next day to settle his piling up paperwork. Just a few hours ago he also received a phone call from the younger man, saying that he will not make it home today since he still need to prepare some documents for an important meeting with a very important client tomorrow. And as if the fact that Jun will take all those chance to disappear and go partying at club after sending him to bed isn’t enough already, just a while ago hears Jun’s drunken giggle follow by woman’s voice comes from downstairs. He however just closes his eyes when their footsteps grow closer on the stairways before he hears sound of door being opened and shut later.
A few hours perhaps has passed before he wakes up and confusedly stares at the darkness, eventually realize that he has fallen asleep. Sighing, Satoshi then sits on the bed and rubs his eyes, later sleepily making his move toward the door. By the time he reaches downstairs, he found Jun is standing on the doorstep with the latter’s back is facing him. It isn’t until he hears the younger one’s laughter he finally realizes that Jun is currently talking with someone and decides to go to the washroom instead. Yet, when he passes by the kitchen to go back to his room, he surprises once sees that Jun is already sitting on one of the dining chairs in the kitchen. Noticing the latter’s empty gaze and slump figure worries him that he decides to comes in there.
“J-un?” the called man immediately startles from his daze by that. Though seemingly tipsy by the booze he already consumed, Satoshi can see the concern look that his brother has as he turns to him.
“Nii-san? You are not sleepy yet?”
Satoshi just shakes his head in return. The two of them then fall into short silence as he notices how his younger brother lost in his own thought again while sipping the beer he is holding. Seeing the same unreadable expression that appears on the latter’s face somehow makes the older man’s heart clench sadly as he steps closer.
“Jun, you a-re not o-kay.”
He notices how Jun immediately flinches by his words.
“You a-re not li-ke thi-s be-fore. May-be I ca-n’t un-der-stand why, bu-t you loo-k trou-bled. You loo-k li-ke you are un-sure.”
That surprises the younger man. For a few seconds, Jun’s expression clearly shows that he is torn about something. However, it doesn’t take long before it is replaced by an emotionless one again.
“You should sleep, Nii-san. It's late.”
When Jun starts to sip his drink again, Satoshi has an urge to snatch it away. Yet, he tore his gaze away instead and clenches his hands.
“You kno-w, Jun? I met Ma-saki. Ma-saki was th-e one who to-ok ca-re of me whe-n I lo-st.”
The unexpected revelation nearly makes Jun slips his beer. Clearly shocked, the younger man immediately turns to his brother with his wide eyes.
“What? How-?”
“He to-ld me that he mis-calcu-late-d some-thi-ng. He allo-wed the ma-nager to han-dle it, the-n it was lea-ked to oth-er com-pa-ny. Tha-t’s why he ha-d to qu-it.”
“What? Wait. That’s why Sho fired him? But isn't that sounds more like the manager’s mistake instead of him?”
“I sa-id tha-t too…but, Ma-sa-ki sa-id it was-n’t the ma-in rea-son.”
All of a sudden, Satoshi becomes quiet. That makes Jun who is still waiting for him to continue confusedly frown, wondering the reason behind the sudden change. By the time the older brother looks up, Jun is taken aback by the hurt gaze.
“No. Of course that’s not the main reason, Nii-san. That’s not the only reason why I chose to quit.”
Masaki’s answer made Satoshi widened his eyes due to confusion. As soon as Masaki returned from his job an hour ago, he immediately took him out for a lunch in a nearby restaurant. Satoshi immediately nodded to show his understanding when Masaki told him that he couldn’t talk about the full story, but he never expected to find out what he heard as well.
“Sho…trusted me a lot. I even promised to follow his lead no matter what. Before…that happened, Sho already reminded me so many times to be careful with the proposal since it’s very confidential and might be the important card for us to win over the client. He even accompanied me in office until midnight and helped everything he can just to make sure I completed it perfectly. Yet…I…”
Masaki immediately stopped when his voice began to tremble. Confused, Satoshi only can watch his brother’s sad expression before he slowly hold the latter’s hand. Masaki seemed surprise by it, but nodded when saw his brother’s reassuring look.
“A-Anyway, something happened and I couldn’t longer pay attention with the task. I started to do a lot of mistakes with the calculation and had to fix it…over and over again. In the end, I became too overwhelmed and lost confident with myself. Sho told me to let him handle the rest, but I insisted…even when I knew I almost break at that time. Then…I-I did…that stupid mistake.”
Satoshi patiently waited when saw the younger one nearly cried by now. The first teardrop finally fell from Masaki’s eye by the time he continued his confession.
“I-I asked for a help from a senior accountant. He said t-there are too many mistakes in there, so I-I asked him to help me fix it. Sho already told me so many times to not let anyone touch the document before, b-but I wasn’t thinking rationally at that time. T-Then on the next day…I-I found out that the director already took that file from the senior...b-before he can fix. T-Those people have the power after all. And then-and…then-”
Masaki already had difficulty to breathe by this time as he finally had emotional breakdown. Extremely depressed to see his usually cheerful brother cried like that in front of him, Satoshi keep on rubbing the latter’s arm while saying ‘it’s okay’. It took several more minutes before Masaki eventually can control his sobs and wiped his tears with his free hand.
“A-A lot of things happened a-already before that incident. I-I know it was very shame of me, b-but I didn’t remember much. I-I only knew that-that the proposal had been e-exposed to the rival company t-through my email when I-I was interrogated. B-But it was still because of my...carelessness in the end, s-so I took responsibility of it...”
“B-But it was-n’t you who e-mail-ed the pro-posal, right? So it was-n’t your fa-ult! Y-You only mis-cal-cu-lated.”
“No -I…It’s really complicated, Nii-san. I-I lost focus and probably…didn’t realize that I a-attached it in one of my email that I sent t-to them. And I can assure you t-that Sho wasn’t the type to easily f-fire someone b-because of that too. Of course, h-he didn’t believe the directors too at first, b-but when Sho went to check my inbox h-himself later…h-he found out that the one w-who sent it was really me. I-I really didn’t n-notice that I attached it t-to the rival company as t-the receiver. A-At first, Sho just wondered w-why I sent that without his permission, but t-then he questioned w-why I had…L-LAB Corporation in my c-contact list from the first…place. Then when he looked through a-and saw that I’ve been contacting them for the past weeks… He finally lost it. H-He said I was a traitor. I-I won’t blame him though.”
The shocking truth sends Jun speechless for a while. Nothing escapes the young brother’s mouth as he just looks at Satoshi with his surprise gaze.
“Why did he contact the rival company?”
“He di-dn’t tell me. He sa-id it’s con-fe-den-tial. But tha-t’s why Sho got ang-ry. Sho fe-lt bet-ray.”
Not knowing what to say anymore, Jun just nods. Listening to that finally reminds him about the news that he had read on the newspaper 2 years ago when he was on his way from Kyoto after receiving a call from hospital about Satoshi's accident. Now, everything seems to come into a piece.
“The company’s share dropped 30% after that. If I’m not mistaken the higher ups even had to sell some assets and properties to cover the loss so they don’t have to fire any workers. That decision is so typically Sho…”
“But Sho fi-red M-asa-ki.”
“Or Masaki quit himself. Masaki might feel responsible for that too. Or if it’s Sho who fired him…it’s understandable too. He had to do that if he wanted to save the company’s reputation and hundreds more workers.”
Satoshi just chews his lip instead. He then waits for Jun to say something, anything for Masaki’s sake. Yet, when he watches the younger man just takes out more beer from inside the refrigerator instead, Satoshi finally loses it and stamps back to upstairs. He really thought Jun can give some good ideas to solve this matter before, but he was totally wrong. And looking by how drunken Jun actually is, he isn’t even sure if the latter will still remember what they talked about next morning. Furious by the thought, Satoshi hastily enters his room and about to close the door when someone suddenly holds it. He blinks confusedly when that person then opens it back from outside, but turns to surprise when found Kazu’s face appear behind it.
“Nii-san…will you listen to me?”
Not expecting it, Satoshi immediately stills.

The next morning, a usual loud alarm clock sound echoes all over the bedroom of the youngest Osayama son. Furious, the said man growls and buries his face deeper on the pillow by the annoying sound which worsens his headache after drinking his whole heart last night. After blindly reaches for the ringing thing on the bed stand for a while, he eventually gets to hit the stop button on top and sighs by the welcoming silence. Just when he is about to hide under his fluffy blanket back though, his hand accidentally knocks off something that causes it to fall to the floor. Both too sleepy and in pain to move, Jun at first decides to ignore it, but in the end pokes his head out to pick it up.
However, the sight of an old familiar photo that already staring back at him from the floor immediately sends him still.
“Mom. No.”
The 7 years old Jun desperately said while refusing to let go of his mother’s hand. He swiftly shook his head when the woman on her 30s persuaded him to release her that in the end forced their nanny at that time to come forward. Kazu had long started to cry on the doorstep with Masaki while the teary-eyed Ohno and Sho helplessly watched from aside.
“Jun, please. Don’t make this harder.” the mother spoke as soft as she can while trying to free herself again. However, Jun’s grip was too strong even when both she and the nanny struggled to make him let go of her together later. Who wanted to be separated from their mother after all?
“Please, don’t go. I will be a good boy. Just, please, stay with us. Please, mom.”
His round, pleading eyes turned the lady speechless. In the end, she looked at the nanny and nodded as a sign for her to let him go. Putting a smile on her face, she then stood at the same height with her son and stroked his hair lovingly using her free hand. That made Jun to look at her with big, hopeful eyes as she started to speak.
“Jun, you love mommy right?”
Jun hurriedly nodded. That made the woman smiled even wider before she rubbed Jun’s cheek with her thumb.
“But mommy…doesn’t feel so happy staying in here anymore. And no, it’s not because Jun and Kazu are bad boys. Not also because of Sato-chan, Sho-chan, and Ma-chan are at fault. You boys are the best children ever. It’s just…mommy…just want to live happily.”
“We-We don’t make mommy happy?”
“It’s not like that, honey. It’s just…mommy’s real happiness…isn’t here.”
Couldn’t understand a thing, Jun confusedly blinked his eyes when his mother kissed him on head. Her hand then slipped from his before he realized it, making him rushed forward to catch her back though their nanny already hold him back in her arms again, the old lady herself already crying by the entire heartbreaking scene. Once seeing their mother disappeared inside the car with an unknown man smiling beside her, he started to struggle with all his might to chase over her. Both Kazu and Masaki already started to cry aloud at this moment while Satoshi and Sho came to stand near the car with their tears-stained face. Right when the car was eventually driven away from there, Jun finally managed to escape their nanny’s hold and went after their mother. He continued to scream for her until his voice turned to hoarse while tears continues to drench his face, but their mother didn’t look at him back - not even once. Even when he fell on the rough road later, it was his brothers who rushed to help him up and tried to calm him down while the car continued to move further away and finally disappeared from his view.
If their mother thought they are the best children ever, why did she still leave?
Sighing, Jun quickly sits on the bed and rubs his face. After taking a few minutes to get used with the strong hangover he has, he finally picks the old family photo up and put it back on his desk. He can’t remember how it suddenly appears next to his bed, but considering how drunk he was last night, he knows he shouldn’t question it. Later when he enters the kitchen while hissing due to the thumping pain, he immediately searches for some aspirin to lessen it. Just when he is about to swallows the pills along with some water though, he finally notices the presence of a piece of paper on the dining table which isn’t supposed to be there last night.
Dear Jun,
We are going to look for Masaki. Kazu comes with me, so don’t worry :D Sorry for leaving without saying anything and please, say my sorry to Sho too. I promise we will try to bring Masaki back! Just wait for it!
Satoshi xoxox
I’m not sure how long this will take, but we will try to settle this ASAP. If Sho asks, just tell him it’s my plan. I promise I will take responsibility for all this mess when I come back.
Kazu
Both the names and the familiar handwriting makes him nearly drops his glass. By the time he rushes to the front door, his eyes widen when notice the absence of two pairs of sneakers inside the shoes racks. The conversation with Satoshi last night immediately plays in his head by this, connecting all the missing pieces together...
