She's never been this exhausted. She's been weary before, fallen asleep with her head on a pile of files, but she's never been this tired in her bones. She might actually be close to being in love with Aidan right now, because he's the one who bought her through it, the one who placed her baby into her arms.
Alfie. Her Alfie. At last.
At no point in her life did she really think that this would happen. She shifts his tiny weight in her arms, skims her head over the fragile shape of his skull, feels the place where he's still open to the air.
"Hello, baby," she says. "How do you feel about Reader as a middle name."
He just burps at her.
