Chapter 7: Special
“Look alive, people! It’s lunch time! I bought some food for you guys!”
SooYoung announced loudly as she set her foot upon the garage. She walked towards the lounging area of the garage and placed the bags of food on the table. A few of the workers came up and thanked her gratefully before digging in the little feast in front of them.
“Wow, why are you guys like a pack of hungry wolves?” SooYoung asked as the men wolfed down the food hungrily.
“You don’t know Noona, ever since after the snow storm that took place 2 weeks ago our garage has been filled with cars!”
Kyung Joon, one of the workers, spoke out after swallowing the morsel of food in his mouth.
“Business is that great huh?”
She commented casually before taking a seat at one of the lounge chair.
“Well, business has been great before Soo Woo Hyung passed it down to Kiddo Tae. But I don’t deny it’s getting better than before after kiddo took over. She has her way and her talent, got to take my hats off for that.”
Won Jin, the oldest and most experienced mechanics, replied with a shrug. He was Soo Woo Hyung’s best friend and partner and had been working in this garage ever since it started operating. They met Taeyeon when the latter rented a room from her current apartment, which was once occupied by Soo Woo. They never knew what happened to Taeyeon, but the latter had always been keen on looking on as Soo Woo and Won Jin repaired cars. As day passes by, Soo Woo and his wife had taken a liking on Taeyeon, especially Soo Woo, on Taeyeon’s curiosity and smartness. He had always told Won Jin that Taeyeon is his daughter that he never had. Taeyeon was a gift from the heaven to him. When they found out that Taeyeon has a knack on doing things with her both hands, Soo Woo decided to teach the latter everything about car mechanic and his effort paid off, seeing how business has been blooming for the garage.
It seemed that destiny and fate has a part to play in their meeting for Soo Woo injured his hand in one of an accident and could never repair cars again. They were saddened by the news but Soo Woo wasn’t.
“It’s time for me to retire. I’m old and I think I had repaired enough cars. I’m old.”
That’s was the only sentence that Soo Woo said to comfort them.
The couple left the country to another part of the world, deciding to stay there for their retirement and they decided to leave the garage for Taeyeon. The latter had refused but Soo Woo had his own way of persuasion.
SooYoung smiled as the memories flood into her mind.
“Yeah, Kiddo Tae is always your kiddo, isn’t she?”
She teased and laughed as Won Jin barked out in his ruff laughter.
“She always is. Always will. You and MiYoung are my kiddos too.”
“Nah, admit it Won Jin Appa! You loved MiYoung more than me!”
Won Jin laughed. He was happy to have these few new presences in his life since he has been alone for most of his life.
“I have no comments. Just know that all of you are my kiddos and it’ll never change.”
SooYoung made a face at the older man before standing up.
“If you’re looking for Kiddo, she’s at the back.”
Won Jin stated before taking a piece of fruit tart and popped it in his mouth.
“No, I’m looking for Sica.”
“Ah… Sica Noona’s at the back too.”
One of the young boys replied and SooYoung raised an eyebrow at the reply. Nodding her head, she took a box of tarts away. She entered the back of the garage and immediately saw the two of them.
“Hey!”
She greeted cheerfully.
“Youngie! Where’s Tiff?”
Jessica called out cheerfully before going over to hug her best friend.
“She’s working. I dropped by because I have a meeting nearby here.”
“How was Unnie’s wedding then?!”
“It’s splendid. Beautiful.”
She gave out a wide smile and saw Jessica returning the same one.
“It’s a pity I can’t go though.”
Jessica replied softly and SooYoung ruffled her hair gently.
“Unnie understand. It’s okay. Beside, Unnie said you can visit her as soon as you’re more stable with the little one.”
SooYoung replied before going over to the couch that was placed at the back of the garage. She placed the box of tart on the table in front before kicking the feet that was sticking out under a car.
“The hell?”
SooYoung snickered when she heard Taeyeon’s voice from below.
“You should welcome me by at least giving me a greeting!”
“I don’t really want to see you actually. I’m busy.”
Taeyeon answered as she pushed herself out from under the car. She saw SooYoung taking a seat on the couch comfortably before shrugging her shoulders.
“I’m here for Sica anyway. Well, that reminds me, what is she doing here in the garage? Shouldn’t she be resting upstairs?”
“We just got back from her genealogy check.”
Taeyeon replied casually before placing down the spanner in her hand to exchange it with another tool. She then lay back down and pushed herself under the car again.
“How’s it then?”
SooYoung turned her attention back to Jessica, who was eating her lunch.
“Doctor said everything’s fine? I’m starting to gain weight and my blood pressure is normal.”
Jessica replied cheerfully and it brought a smile on SooYoung’s face. It’s been quite some time for her to see Jessica smiling so brightly.
“That’s great. What about the baby?”
Jessica beamed happily before placing down her lunch. She turned to her side and searched inside her bag for awhile before pulling out a small card.
“Look! Isn’t she cute?”
Jessica whispered softly and sweetly as she passed the card to SooYoung. With a curious frown, SooYoung took over the card and flipped it around. Her eyes widened when she realized that the card was actually an ultrasound picture of the baby. Although it was in black and white, SooYoung could make out the little human shape that was curled up in the womb.
“It’s a she?”
She whispered back just as quietly, still staring intensely at the picture in her hands. The baby looks so tiny and she doesn’t know why but her heart aches at the sight.
“Yeah, Dr. Kwon told us that it’s a baby girl today.”
“She’s so tiny…”
Jessica let out a small smile as she stared at the picture.
“She is. But she’s healthy and she’ll grow bigger as time passes by.”
SooYoung smiled and looked up at Jessica with her eyes sparkling.
“I don’t know why, but I’m sure I’m gonna love her so, so, much. Wait till Fany hears that you’re carrying a baby girl!”
Jessica giggled, her hands taking over the picture carefully before placing it back into her bag.
“I know right? She’s going to go crazy on her clothes and everything.”
“It’s going to be a pink paradise.”
Taeyeon’s voice sounded in the room and the both of them looked over. The older girl was already standing up, keeping her tools back in the proper place.
“Pink, everything is going to be pink in my apartment.”
Taeyeon muttered and shuddered at the thought of it. SooYoung chuckled out loudly while Jessica smiled at the sight.
“It’s going be hell for you huh?”
SooYoung asked in between her laughter but Jessica blushed lightly from Taeyeon’s answer.
“Well… I don’t think I’ll mind having a pink paradise room for the little princess?”
“Little princess? What makes you so sure she’s going to be your little princess?”
SooYoung retorted, feeling unhappy that Taeyeon is claiming the little unborn baby first.
“Well, for the fact that this princess is living in my palace right now?”
Taeyeon answered nonchalantly with her back facing the two of them as she checked the file of paper on the car’s condition.
“Now, now, which princess are you talking about right now?”
SooYoung asked teasingly while Jessica nudged her at the side, mouthing her name with a displeased expression when she caught on what SooYoung is trying to do.
With a sigh, Taeyeon turned around after placing the file back on the table and leaned on it gently.
“The baby?”
Taeyeon replied flatly while looking at SooYoung with deadpanned eyes.
“Not Jessica?”
“If her baby is the princess, she naturally will be the Queen.”
Taeyeon answered with a frown on her face, not knowing why SooYoung couldn’t understand such simply hierarchy.
“And what are you, the King?”
SooYoung snickered and Taeyeon was rendered speechless. Damn, she’s fell into the stupid trap.
“Youngie!”
Jessica warned with a hiss and Taeyeon glanced at her for a second before looking away. It seemed that Jessica was unhappy with the topic. And it hurts.
Shaking her head to mask away the hurt, Taeyeon straightened her body before walking out.
“I don’t even know why we’re having this conversation.”
She muttered under her breath and halted for a moment as she passed by Jessica.
“You’d finish up your lunch quickly before it turns cold and go back if you’re tired.”
She told Jessica softly, eyes not leaving the ground, before walking out of the front of the garage.
If I have the chance, of course I would like to be the King.
She scoffed in her heart.
But it seems impossible. I could only be the black knight, forever hidden by the Prince, the rightful heir of the throne.
-
“So, how’s it living in here so far?”
SooYoung asked as she settled down on Jessica’s bed. They had returned to Taeyeon’s apartment for a change after SooYoung suggested bringing Jessica to the city for some shopping. She had seen how Jessica’s stomach grown from her previous visit. The shirt that she was wearing seemed to fit her exactly and SooYoung knew that sooner or later, Jessica is going to outgrown her clothes for the time being.
“It’s been good?”
SooYoung hummed back in a reply as she casted a glance around the whole room, noticing the bareness of it.
“So do you’ve any planning about the future from now onwards?”
Jessica halted her actions for a few seconds before resuming what she had been doing previously.
“No. Not yet. I just want to concentrate on adjusting the baby’s and my health.”
“Fair enough.”
Silence blanketed over them before Jessica broke it with her bag shouldered on.
“Let’s go.”
SooYoung stood up and tailed along behind Jessica, standing at the staircase while waiting for Jessica to lock up the door. She allowed Jessica to take the lead before following closely behind her.
“Taeyeon?”
Jessica called out softly before tapping on the figure that was bending over, under the hood of the car. Taeyeon straightened up her body and turned her attention to Jessica.
“I’m going to the city with SooYoung.”
Taeyeon stared at her blankly for a few seconds before looking down at Jessica’s hands.
“To the city?”
“Yeah.”
Taeyeon looked up and turned her head to locate SooYoung, who was walking towards her black Mercedes.
A wave of relief hit her as soon as she saw no luggage of Jessica’s with either of them.
“S - sure.”
Jessica flashed a small smile and hesitated for a while. She reached forward and pulled off the old tattered towel hanging on Taeyeon’s working suit. Clutching it tightly in her hands, Jessica lifted it and wiped the droplets of sweat on Taeyeon’s forehead.
Taeyeon’s eyes widened at the actions and she couldn’t do anything but stared at the younger girl. Her heart was racing and she couldn’t breathe. Fully aware of what she had just done, Jessica kept her expression at the bay as she stuff the tattered towel back into Taeyeon’s working suit.
Still keeping her eyes away from Taeyeon’s, she mumbled softly to the ground.
“Don’t push yourself too hard. I’ll see you tonight. Text me if you need anything okay?”
Gathering all the courage she has, Jessica lifted up her head. Pretending to be unaware of her blushing face, she gave a slight wave of hand before hurriedly walking away towards SooYoung’s car.
“Bye.”
Taeyeon did not have the chance to reply Jessica but to only let her gaze followed the younger girl until they were out of sight.
Needless to say, Taeyeon returned back to work with the biggest smile on her face she had within these past few years.
-
They were walking down the aisle of the shopping mall, looking around for maternity clothes with a cup of drink in their hands each.
“Say… how are things going between you and… you know, Tae?”
SooYoung mumbled off softly as she stood beside Jessica, checking out the one of the maternity dress normally.
The question caught Jessica off guard, but she recovered quickly. Turning her attention back to the dress she had in hand, she shrugged her shoulders.
“We’re… fine.”
“Fine as in back to how you guys were three years ago, or fine as in awkward roommates’ situation?”
Jessica heaved a soft sigh before hanging the dress back to the hanger stand.
“We can’t go back to what we were three years ago, Soo.”
“Why not?”
“It’s not easy okay? We…”
Jessica halted in her speech, not knowing how to continue anymore.
“Go on, we what?”
SooYoung urged on.
Jessica shook her head exasperatedly.
“We can’t, okay? We just can’t.”
With that, she turned around and walked towards the other dresses.
“I don’t understand. Don’t you love her?”
Jessica stood frozen on her spot at SooYoung’s question. ‘Don’t you love her?’, this has been the question that Jessica tried to ignore for years.
“What has that got to do with anything?”
Jessica whispered, a little harsh before she continued to pick up dresses from the hanger stand.
“It has got to do with everything, Sica. She loves you.”
SooYoung replied softly, eyes staring at the cup of drink she was holding on right now.
“Three years late.”
Jessica muttered back just as softly but SooYoung could hear the bitterness and sadness in it.
“No, Sica. She wasn’t late at all. She had loved you from the start but she denied herself that. Because she thinks that she will hurt you if she doesn’t do that.”
SooYoung explained quietly, raising her head to look at the older girl beside her.
“She still hurt me in the end. It doesn’t matter anymore…”
Jessica whispered softly, eyes brimming with tears as her memories brought her back to that fateful day, three years ago, where she has her heart broken by the older girl.
“It does matter! Aren’t you happy when you’re with her before? Don’t you want to find back the happiness that you have with her that you couldn’t find with others?”
“I was happy with Dan!”
“But not as happy as you were with Taeyeon, Sica.”
“Who told you so? I loved Dan. I’m even carrying his child right now. We almost got engaged! I was happy with him. If I wasn’t happy with him I wouldn’t even be with him until this stage!”
Jessica retorted back. She was enraged. Angry. Why would SooYoung doubt her happiness? She was happy with Dan. She was happy. She was happier than before she had met Dan.
“Yes, you’re happy. But you can’t deny that the happiness you had with Dan couldn’t even compared to what Taeyeon gave you right? You can’t lie to me Sica. Your eyes tell us everything. Yes, you’re happy but your eyes don’t even sparkle or lit up anymore. Not even when you’re with him. Fany and I saw it with our very own eyes. We’re glad in a way or so that you’ve move on. But we’d be happier if you move on happily. Not moving on by treating him as Taeyeon.”
“W - what!?”
Jessica snapped her head back at SooYoung, feeling incredulous at the words she just heard.
“I did not treat him as Taeyeon!”
“Yeah, right, continue telling yourself that.”
SooYoung rolled her eyes at the obvious denial before going towards the baby section. Jessica followed behind closely, feeling wronged and wanted to clear her name.
“I repeat. I did not treat Dan as Taeyeon!”
“Are you seriously telling me this now? Everyone knew that you are. C’mon, don’t tell me you really noticed nothing about the similarities they have?”
SooYoung commented as she picked up an infant dress and smiled lightly at the design.
“They have no similarities!”
Enough of her best friend’s obliviousness, SooYoung’s heaved a sigh before passing the infant dress to Jessica.
“I’m buying this for little princess. And yes, they do have similarities.”
She stated before walking down the aisle.
“Tell me, does Dan have a dimple?”
“Yes. On his right cheek.”
SooYoung nodded her head and turned around to look at Jessica.
“And Taeyeon?”
“On the right side of her chin.”
Jessica answered without hesitation and SooYoung shrugged her shoulders with a raise of eyebrow.
“You’re kidding me right? That’s not even a similarity they had!”
“Dan has a baby face and an unusual laughter - charming and funny type and what about Taeyeon? She’s famous for her baby face too and her unusual laughter - weird and ahjumma but yeah that’s it.”
Jessica still has that unbelievable look of her face. She still couldn’t find any link that proves that she’s treating Dan as Taeyeon. So what both of them are baby face and have unusual laughter? Jessica is sure that everyone has unusual laughter and perhaps one quarter or even one third of the human population have baby face.
SooYoung hated to do this, but she couldn’t bear seeing her best friend continue to live in denial. Therefore, she decided to give one last hard hit of truth to Jessica.
“Taeyeon’s a doctor, that we all know and Dan? He’s a doctor to be, Jessica, a trainee doctor that specializes in what Taeyeon is specializing in - Cardiologist. You fall in love with him, or rather, like him was because he managed to save you from one of your relapse. And that, that was enough for you to treat him like Taeyeon because well, he give you the spilt image of Taeyeon. Think about it, Jessica. You’re not that dense.”
Jessica stood there, fazed by the explanation given by SooYoung. Had she really? Had she really been treating Dan as Taeyeon along these few years? These few years where she thought she had moved on from Taeyeon, where she thought she had pushed that latter back to her mind was because she had mistaken Dan as Taeyeon?
Seeing the defeated look of Jessica’s, SooYoung was sorry. She was very sorry and guilty but she had no choice. She longed for Taeyeon to be happy. She longed for Jessica to be happy. And if Tiffany said that the only way for both Taeyeon and Jessica to be fine is them helping each other, then the both of them has to be happy because of each other. She sighed inwardly before placing a shoulder around the shorter girl.
“Let’s go.”
She heard Jessica sighed, before she moved reluctantly with her.
“Why… are we having this conversation, Soo?”
She heard Jessica asked softly a few minutes later. Blowing up her fringe, she replied just as softly.
“Because she wasn’t happy, Taeyeon… she was not happy.”
“Why?”
Giving a sad and sympathetic look to Jessica, SooYoung replied with a sad smile painted on her face, praying that the answer will finally bring both their sadness to an end.
“Because you weren’t there with her and she sees it as a punishment for herself. For hurting you when she should love you.”
Jessica stood there, staring at SooYoung for what seemed like a long time through blurry wet eyes before turning away, allowing the hot tears to slide down along her cheeks.
SooYoung wiped away the tears on Jessica’s face with her thumbs softly, feeling her heart break all over again to see her best friend so defeated and sad.
“She never smiled you know? Just a lift of the corner of her lips and that’s it. But never a smile for these past three years…You can call me selfish or anything but I just want to see her smile. See her happy and you happy. Real happy.”
SooYoung whispered as she pulled the shorter girl into her embrace, muffling the sobs that were coming out from the older girl.
“B - but she smiled. I - I saw her smile.”
SooYoung swallowed the lumps in her throat as she rolled her eyes to look at the ceiling before whispering happily.
“That’s because it’s you. You’re always the special one. You’re always special to her.”
“She loves you, do you know that?”
SooYoung continued as she rubbed circles on the latter’s back gently.
Jessica nodded her head against her best friend’s chest. She knows. Of course she knows. Taeyeon’s late night confession has never left her mind since two weeks ago.
“I love her too, Soo. Always has.”
Jessica confessed softly against SooYoung’s chest and the latter let out a breath of relief.
-
The soft, acoustic music playing from the garage got Jessica and SooYoung entered in with curiosity when they returned from their shopping trip. Jessica recognized the song. It was the song that she had been listening to everyday during her dorm days in the college three years ago because Taeyeon only listened to this singer or band.
They shuffled in quietly and saw Taeyeon lying on lounge chair. Both her arms tucked under her head, a blanket covered only her lower torso, as she slept peacefully with the song playing in the background.
“This girl! What is she thinking, sleeping inside an open garage? Is she intending to get robbed?”
SooYoung muttered under her breath as she approached the older girl, ready to wake her up.
“Soo, it’s fine. You can go home now. I’ll take care of her. Thanks for today.”
Jessica held onto SooYoung’s right arm as she spoke, stopping the younger girl from approaching the sleeping girl.
“Are you sure?”
SooYoung asked, concern laced in her voice.
“Yes, trust me, just closed the shutter for me when you leave.”
Jessica nodded her head and SooYoung relented. She gave Jessica one last look before walking out of the garage, pulling down the shutter gently before allowing it to lock itself when it touched the ground.
Watching the shutter closed fully, Jessica heaved softly before turning around to look at the sleeping Taeyeon. Bon Iver’s song was still playing in the background and Jessica couldn’t help but felt like they were back to three years ago, in the dorm room. With hesitant and careful steps, Jessica walked towards Taeyeon and took a seat gently beside Taeyeon, on the same lounge chair.
“It has got to do with everything, Sica. She loves you.”
“Because she wasn’t happy, Taeyeon… she was not happy.”
“She never smiled you know? Just a lift of the corner of her lips and that’s it. But never a smile for these past three years…”
“That’s because it’s you. You’re always the special one. You’re always special to her.”
“She loves you, do you know that?”
Words of SooYoung’s keep repeating in her mind as Jessica stared at Taeyeon’s face. The once baby face was no longer chubby. It has slimmed down tremendously and matured, even though Jessica still thinks that it is a baby face.
But she couldn’t deny that Taeyeon had changed a lot, grew older and more mature and perhaps more waned. And she couldn’t help but felt that she was part of the reason that contributed to Taeyeon’s sufferings.
Gently, Jessica laid herself comfortably beside Taeyeon on the lounge chair and reached out a hand to caressed Taeyeon’s cheek.
With the half day’s shopping trip and Bon Iver’s voice in the background as lullaby, Jessica soon found herself submitting defeat to the exhaustion and the familiar warmth emitted from beside her. She closed her eyes and went to sleep.
Taeyeon woke up somewhere near dawn and stared at the sleeping figure in her arms in shock. She blinked her eyes a few more times to ensure that she was dreaming like she had been for the past three years. When Jessica was still in her arms when she opened her eyes for the final time, she resorted to pinch her cheeks hardly.
She hissed in pain but Jessica was still in her arms, sleeping as peacefully as she had always been. Frowning, Taeyeon continued to stare at the girl in her arms but widened her eyes when she saw a pair of eyes staring back at her.
She wanted to jump away, feeling embarrassed and uncomfortable that they were both wide awake right now but she didn’t. Not when Jessica was still lying in her embrace quietly, staring at her. Taeyeon shifted her gaze to observe her surrounding but noticed that she was in the garage. Where she knew she fell asleep while waiting for Jessica to come back from the city. So it couldn’t be her that went to sleep with Jessica. It had to be the other way round. And Taeyeon wondered why a light sleeper like her didn’t wake up when Jessica joined her to sleep in the lounge chair.
Because it felt so damn right with her in your arms, that’s why you sleep so peacefully and nicely throughout the night.
She looked back down and saw Jessica still staring at her. Feeling awkward, she decided to be the one that broke the silence.
“SooYeon?”
She whispered softly and carefully.
“SooYoung said you were never happy… she said you never smiled at all.”
Jessica spoke out softly, her eyes never once left Taeyeon. She saw the older girl tensed and gave a small sad smile.
“Why?”
She asked again when Taeyeon relaxed tentatively a few seconds later.
“No reason to.”
Because you’re not here.
Taeyeon replied softly as she looked behind Jessica’s head, not wanting to have any eye contact with the younger girl because of the fear that she will speak the truth. It still feels uncomfortable to be honest with Jessica when they are wide awake. Because speaking the truth made her felt bare. Bare and vulnerable.
Bare and weak.
“But you did. I saw your smile. Why?”
Jessica spoke up again and Taeyeon glanced back to her, not knowing how to answer her question. Not knowing how to tell Jessica that it is because it’s her. It’s because she’s the reason behind her smile.
Jessica swallowed the spit in her mouth before looking down in the invisible gap between their bodies.
“SooYoung told me yesterday, that it’s because I’m special. I’m special to you.”
Her face heated up, feeling embarrassed to say such things upfront to Taeyeon.
She felt a short strong hot breath on her head and heard Taeyeon’s strained voice over her head.
“You are.”
They went silent for a few minutes before Jessica looked up to Taeyeon’s soft and loving eyes.
“You’re special to me too, Taeyeon. You always are, so please, don’t punish yourself anymore. Be happy.”
Taeyeon’s eyes widened in surprise when she felt Jessica’s lips on hers. She closed her eyes quickly and captured the younger girl’s lips, kissing the girl back hungrily as she ravished the long lost taste, the taste that she had missed, craved and desired for the past three years.
Jessica felt Taeyeon responding back and allowed herself to indulge in the kisses, the one that she greatly missed for these past few years before breaking away when they were both out of breath.
With a deep breath, she cupped Taeyeon’s face and whisper so quietly to her.
“Please, don’t punish yourself anymore. I forgive you so please, don’t be unhappy because of me anymore. I don’t deserve to be the reason of it anymore, Taeyeon. You have to be happy, you have to find someone that could make you happy again. I’m not - ”
Her words were cut off by Taeyeon as the older girl took her lips once again.
“No. Only you can make me happy and no one else. I wouldn’t be happy with any other people except you. SooYeon, don’t - don’t say things like this please. I only want you. You.”
Taeyeon swallowed the lump in her throat as she held onto Jessica’s hands that were on her face tightly. She watched as Jessica bit her lower lips hardly before breathing in raggedly.
“Why would you want me? I’m not - I’m pregnant, Taeyeon. I’m pregnant with someone’s child. Why would you want to take up the responsibility that is not yours?”
“I don’t care. I don’t care if you’re pregnant or not. I only want you. I want you and all of you and that include the baby. I don’t give a damn of who does it belongs to. As long as it belongs to you and you belongs to me, the baby belongs to me too. I don’t care, SooYeon. I only want you by my side. I don’t want to lose you again when I finally have you back with me. I - I love you. I really do.”
Jessica was crying. So is Taeyeon. But neither of them was bothered by the tears that were falling down uncontrollably from their eyes.
Taeyeon was looking pleadingly at Jessica, her grip on her hands never once loosened and Jessica smiled lightly from her tears before pulling her hands away from Taeyeon’s grip to hug the older girl.
“I love you too.”
Exhaling with relief, Taeyeon hugged the younger girl back tightly before showering her head with kisses. Feeling her world was back to whole with the younger girl back in her life fully.
“I’ll never let you go again. Never.”
She whispered firmly against Jessica’s ear and the younger girl chuckled, causing a wide smile spreading on her own face.
“You’re so cheesy.”
“Only for you. Only for you, my special one.”
