Chapter 2: Rewind or Refresh
She was running down the concourse that linked her dormitory to the school main building in a great hurry, as she had forgotten her assignment, and was in a rush to retrieve it before she is late for her class. Finally reaching the lobby of her dormitory, she hastened her speed in order to catch the lift that was about to close.
A huge force sent her back to the ground and she groaned loudly as the pain from her bum spread across her body. Wincing in pain, she slowly pushed herself up to find the cause of her fall, only to realize that another girl was lying on the ground, seemingly to be in more pain than her.
“Are - are you alright?”
She stuttered in concern as she crawled her way to the girl’s side, seeing that their distance was not far from each other.
“Urgh… I - I’m fine.”
“Are you sure?”
She watched as the girl nodded her head slowly before pushing herself up to sit, her long hair covering the profile and she bit her lips in guilt. The girl then pushed her hair behind her ear with her finger, showing her profile clearly before standing up but hissed loudly and almost fell back towards the ground again.
She hurriedly reached out and held onto the girl’s waist to straighten her before taking another look at her.
“I - I think you are hurt.”
The girl looked at her with a pained expression before hissing out softly.
“Isn’t it quite obvious?”
Embarrassed, she cleared her throat before pulling her hands off the girl’s waist slowly when she had made sure that the girl could stay on her own. Then, she crouched down and slowly felt around the ankle of the girl’s left leg.
“Does it hurt?”
She asked before glancing up to the girl and saw the girl nodding her head with grimace. With a frown, she looked back down and checked her wrist watch before muttering a curse in her heart.
“I think you sprained your ankle. I’m in a rush now. Do you think you can make it to the nurse’s office by yourself?”
She stood up hurriedly and watched as the girl stared at her blankly. It was quite a cute sight to see actually.
“Er… where is it?”
“You… don’t know?!”
“No I don’t? I haven’t in been here for more than 30mins as you can see here.”
The lady retorted back as she cocked her head to the sight, where a luggage was standing beside her. She heaved a sigh inwardly and knew that there’s no way she’s going to make it to class on time.
“Fine, I’ll send you back to your dorm and perhaps I could ask a favor from your roommate to send you to the nurse’s office? I’ll pay my apology after my class ended?”
The girl waved her hand in the air before limping towards her unattended luggage.
“Just send me to my dorm and I’ll figure it out by myself.”
“Okay. I’m Taeyeon by the way. Sorry for the accident. I don’t mean it really. Can I know your room number?”
Taeyeon asked as she hurriedly went over to help the limping girl, holding onto her elbow and pulled the luggage off her hands before moving towards the lift together.
“Level 10, room 304”
Taeyeon stopped in her track and turned around to stare at the girl.
“Jung SooYeon?”
The girl stared at her in shock before nodding her head hesitantly.
“Y - yeah… how do you know my name?”
Taeyeon gave her a goofy grin before shaking her head.
“Because you’re my new roommate?”
-
“Boss? Boss? Noona?”
Taeyeon snapped out of her trance and looked over to her right side where Ji Hyun was staring at her with a baffled expression.
“You okay?”
Clearing her throat, Taeyeon nodded her head before looking down to her plate of jjajangmyeon. A small smile appeared on her face when she remembered what had happened five years ago, her first meeting with SooYeon and how similar it is as of compared to three hours ago.
Nothing had changed. SooYeon is still as beautiful as five years ago.
Or should she say, everything had changed?
Nothing is as beautiful as it is since three years ago.
It’s been three hours and Taeyeon is aware of the presence that is living in her apartment above the garage right now. It was awkward and a blur what had happened just now. Their first meeting after three years and it was more than uncomfortable and unprepared. Both of them were at a loss of what to do and it was only when Ji Hyun spoke out, asking why is she staring at her roommate instead of inviting her up to her new home, then did she snap out of her trance. The trip up to her apartment was quiet and tense and Taeyeon knew that Jessica was ready to run away when she hesitated to enter her apartment.
Taeyeon heaved a loud sigh when she remembered how Jessica had avoided her eyes and kept to herself protectively when she showed her around the small apartment, telling her of the basic things that she need to know like where are all the necessities are at and how to operate certain things. Knowing her presence was unwelcomed, even though it was her own apartment; Taeyeon hurriedly excused herself out of the apartment and went back to work leaving Jessica alone to settle down in her new place.
All of a sudden, it then hit her hardly that she is going to spend a period of time with Jessica, with her presence unwanted at all. She felt sick in the stomach and immediately lost all appetite for her lunch. Pushing away the plate of noodle, Taeyeon stood up and went into her office, leaving all her service crews in confusion.
“Hello?”
Taeyeon swallowed hardly when she heard the greeting. Closing her eyes, she let out a shaky breath before replying.
“Why didn’t you tell me it was SooYeon?”
A moment of silence before the voice spoke up again.
“How do you expect me to tell you that it’s Jessi?”
“You could just say it. You could just tell me that it’s SooYeon that needed a room!”
“And? And what would you do?”
Taeyeon was stumped by the question and after opening and closing her mouth like a gaping fish for a few seconds, she sighed in defeat.
“You know Fany… you know -
“I know. I know.”
Tiffany replied and let out a sigh that made the both of them fell in silence.
“Do you want her out?”
Tiffany spoke up a minute afterwards and Taeyeon stared at her working table for a few seconds.
Does she want Jessica out?
It’s been three years. Three years since she saw Jessica. Even though they had only met for thirty minutes, the thought of Jessica out of her life once again made her heart ache, as if she was cutting something off her heart.
No. She doesn’t want Jessica out. She never wanted her out in her life in the first place.
But what about Jessica? What does Jessica wants? Does she want to be out? She left first, didn’t she?
“Where would she be then?”
“I don’t know… somewhere I could find for her to rent and stay?”
“Alone?”
Tiffany laughed out a little at Taeyeon’s silly question.
“I don’t know, TaeTae. Maybe she will be alone, maybe she won’t be alone. I haven’t even had any place on hand right now.”
“What happened to her? Where is she staying previously? Why - why does she need a place suddenly?”
Taeyeon shoot off in a hurry. She’s eager and curious to know but only got a sigh in return from Tiffany.
“You know I’m in no position to tell you all these. If Jessi wants you to know, she will tell you. You can also try asking her?”
“SooYeon… SooYeon will not tell me. You should know that Fany.”
The sadness in Taeyeon tone was so deafening in Tiffany’s ears that the latter could not help but felt her heart aching for it.
But the truth will probably hurt Taeyeon more.
“I - don’t know, TaeTae. I could only tell you… well. It’s been three years right? And… it’s not wrong for Jessica to… move on?”
Tiffany started slowly and licked her lips before adjusting the phone in her hand.
“She just broke up and well, she decided to leave the apartment she shared with her boyfriend. So she’s in need of a place to stay right now?”
“But why my place?”
“You know of her condition don’t you? I just thought that it will be the best that if she stays with you since Soo and I are going to be out of town for a month. There’s nobody that will keep a lookout for her.”
Taeyeon tensed up immediately when she heard what Tiffany had said and she feared for the worst.
“Why? Did it worsen?”
“No, no! It’s just that you are more familiar with it and we thought it would be the best if she’s with you.”
Taeyeon frowned.
“If her condition is fine, then why would she need me?”
“This… I can’t tell you this Taeyeon. It has to be Jessi to tell you personally. I’m sorry. If it is still an inconvenient situation for you, I will find a place and tell Jessi about it.”
“No! No… SooYeon can stay. I’m fine.”
Taeyeon hurriedly interrupted.
“Well… okay then. Just give us a ring if you need anything okay?”
“Okay.”
“TaeTae… take good care of Jessi, would you?”
She should. She needs to. That’s what she’s suppose to do and will always do.
“I will.”
The line ended and Taeyeon stared off in a distance before lowering her phone back to the table. Taking a deep breath, she leaned back against her chair and threw her head up, staring at the ceiling of her office.
She has to. She has to before… before SooYeon leaves again.
-
SooYeon. SooYeon. SooYeon.
The voice kept ringing in her head like a broken record and Jessica had no idea how to stop this soft ringing. It’s been years. Years since someone called her SooYeon and never did she expect to hear it again from someone that she had denied her rights to.
Half an hour ago, Taeyeon was around the house, showing her the place and things that she should be familiar with during her stay. Taeyeon’s scent and voice was wrapping her all around, making her feel uncomfortable and vulnerable.
Why? Why it does always have to be Taeyeon who is beside her whenever she’s at her weakest moment?
Be it five years ago or five years later. It’s always Taeyeon.
No. Jessica shook her head furiously at the thought.
No, Taeyeon isn’t always at her side when she was at her weakest moment. That fateful days from three years ago proved it, these three long painful years that she had hid it perfectly showed it. Taeyeon, Taeyeon left her in pain during these years.
Taeyeon did nothing but gave her hurt these years. Yes. Taeyeon did it.
Jessica nodded her head firmly and took a deep breath before looking up from the bed that she was sitting on and looked around the guest room. It was simple and cold, showing no vital signs of people living in here before. A simple work desk beside the windows, a closet that was opened to get rid of the unused wood scent, lying beside was Jessica’s luggage. She looked down and skimmed the bed sheet with her hands slowly, feeling the softness and coldness from it. Another deep breath and Jessica could smell a faint softener scent from it.
Frowning, Jessica pulled the comforter up a little and took a sniff from it. It was the scent. The same scent from four years ago. It was the flowery scent that Jessica remembered liking it so much when the both of them went for a groceries trip at the nearby supermarket during their dorm days. She remembered that both of them had decided to try to cut down some expense by sharing some domestic stuff together and laundry was part of it.
She remembered that she was the one that chose the laundry softener, sniffing bottles and bottles of it with Taeyeon, trying to get one that both of them will like and it ended up to be this one.
Honestly, Taeyeon didn’t really like it. Taeyeon preferred one with a mild scent and she doesn’t really like flowery scent. But upon seeing the blissful expression on Jessica’s face when she smell it, the beam and sparkling eyes on Jessica’s face when she turned around and told Taeyeon about it, she couldn’t help but agree with her.
Four years.
Taeyeon did not love her.
Three years.
Since she left her.
Now.
Jessica felt wetness on her cheeks because of the familiarity and memories that intruded her mind like a bullet train.
And she wondered if this was a rewind of her life or a refresh of her life?
Da-thump. Da-thump.
The sound that she remembered vividly when she met Taeyeon.
Da-thump. Da-thump. Da-thump.
The sound that she felt when she knew she had fallen in love with Taeyeon.
Da-thump. Da-da-thump. Da-da-da-thump-thump. Da-da-thump-thump-dathump.thump.
Jessica gasped hurriedly for air, and clutched her chest with her hand hardly.
Her heartbeat starts to increase and Jessica gasped hardly for air and turned around to grab her handbag from the night table beside the bed. Her eyes rolled backwards and she squeezed her eyes tightly while fumbling around her bag messily.
Her fingers touched upon a cylinder object around and shakily, she grabbed the object and pulled it out of her bag. She was breathing hard and her heart was aching. Her world spin and her sight was turning blurry and vividly. Popping the cap opened, she shook the pills out on her hands but before she could pop the pills in her mouth, her world turned black.
The last thing she saw before she hit the carpeted ground was a pair of feet and a faint calling of her name.
“SOOYEON!”
-
Taeyeon ran over to the collapsed body within seconds and scooped the being into her arms and tried to wake her up by tapping on her cheeks. However there was no response.
“SooYeon! SooYeon! Wake up please, SooYeon!”
Taeyeon placed one of her arm under Jessica’s knees and another one around her shoulder and lifted the younger girl up, placing her on the bed.
“SooYeon? Answer me please?”
Taeyeon pleaded silently before proceeding to unbutton the girl’s jacket and take it off, allowing for more air ventilation. She then placed her ear on top of the younger girl’s chest to check on her heartbeats.
“Damn.”
She cursed when the irregular beats echoed in her ears.
“SooYeon!”
Taeyeon called out once again and saw Jessica’s eyes fluttered opened for a second before closing again. She then picked up the medicine bottle on the ground and took off to the kitchen to get a glass of water. Running back, she placed the glass on the night table before sitting beside Jessica and scooped the unconscious girl up into her embrace.
Pouring two pills out of the bottle, she pushed it in into Jessica’s mouth and took the glass of water before placing it against the latter’s lips and tilted it slowing, allowing the liquid to flow into her mouth. Placing the glass of water back onto the table, she turned her attention back to Jessica and slowly lowered the girl back onto the bed. Covering the girl with the comforter, Taeyeon then knelt down beside the bed and stared at the pale, tired face silently. With a slow and hesitate hand, she reached over and pushed back an offending hair and tucked it gently behind Jessica’s ears. Sub-consciously, her hand started to trace Jessica’s jaw line slowly and Taeyeon swallowed a lump in her throat. She missed this badly.
She missed tracing the angel-like face badly. She missed kissing this face badly. She missed seeing this face whenever she woke up and before she sleeps badly.
She missed Jessica.
Badly.
And right now, at this moment, it felt like she was back to three years ago where she would always looked after Jessica whenever the girl has a relapse or was sick.
Three years. Did anyone take care of Jessica like this?
Taeyeon pondered for a moment before letting out a soft scoff to mock at her silly question.
There is someone.
Tiffany said it a while ago, didn’t she?
Jessica did move on.
Shaking her head at her foolishness, Taeyeon ran a hand through Jessica’s soft locks of hair before breathing out softly.
“I miss you, SooYeon. Badly.”
Slumping her shoulder in defeat, Taeyeon pulled out one of Jessica’s hand gently and place two of her finger on her wrist, deciding to check if her heartbeat has returned to her normal rate.
It did.
But Taeyeon had felt other thing.
Another vital sign in Jessica’s body and it made Taeyeon widened her eyes in shock.
Retrieving her hand back slowly, Taeyeon stood up weakly before staring at Jessica’s peaceful sleeping face for a moment. She blinked her eyes for a few times, digesting the information that she found out by herself slowly before staggering to the door weakly.
Pregnant.
SooYeon is pregnant.
Closing the door, Taeyeon leaned her body against it before sliding down weakly, her breath ragged and her mind was buzzing from the sudden information.
SooYeon…
Is pregnant.
