Reccer's comments: Ah, the halcyon days of early 2011! I'm astonished to see that this lovely fic has never been recommended here before. So ... One evening, John kisses Sherlock, whose reaction is confusing, to say the least. And yet Sherlock also makes it plain that he wishes to continue. And yet John is sure it doesn't mean much to him. Yeah, I know, we've all seen this trope before -- but not often handled with such sweetness, poignancy, wit, and elegance.

An excerpt. John speaks first:

"Pity we didn't know each other at school."
One corner of Sherlock's mouth indented. "We might've done it in the boathouse."

"Your school had a -- of course it had a boathouse."

Sherlock took John's hand and licked curiously at his palm. "Only a small one."

John smiled. "Wonder how we'd have made out. Your large wardrobe and small boathouse, my football kit and stupid haircut --"

Sherlock kissed him hard once. "I'd like to have seen that."

"Nipping off behind the hedge for a quick one. It would have been sweaty-handed bliss," John said dreamily, "at least until," and then he almost literally choked on the words.

Read on the AO3.
