Author's summary: [The author's summary does not reflect the content of this portion of the story, but here it is]: After three dreadful years, even Holmes doesn't expect Watson to accept him back from the dead quite that readily. And neither of them expect the shocking affair of the Dutch steam ship Friesland, which so nearly costs them both their lives...
Reccer's comments: So, the bad news first: This is a WIP that has not been updated since 2011 and I don't know if the author has any plans to come back to it (the author, Waid, is currently busy writing and publishing original novels, so yay for them!). The portion that has been written is not at all about the steam ship Friesland or the post-hiatus reunion between Holmes and Watson, it is instead just about the hiatus itself. BUT...
The Good News: The story as written stands on its own perfectly and it is so stunningly well done that I would hate for anyone to overlook it due to its WIP status. It really is a fully satisfying, heartbreaking hiatus story delving into Mary's last illness and Watson's experiences mourning both her and Holmes.
The main reason I'm recc'ing it here is that it has the best Mary Watson I have so far encountered. I have never, in any other fic, seen Mary's illness written about from Mary's own point of view. Her voice here is incredibly real and moving, and her reflections on her own life and the horrible process of dying slowly are eloquent, individual, and human. This story makes her so real she breathes through the pages. Don't miss her.
The second chapter looks at Watson and the complicated eddies of grief and day-to-day survival and memories and Holmes. A sad, beautiful story.
If you want to read more in this storyline, there is a companion piece written from Holmes's point of view (still during the hiatus), which was recc'd on this comm
here.
