Reccer's comments: I was the (extremely) lucky recipient of this fic in the Nov 2014

In the story Watson is asked merely to be a decoy while Holmes familiarises himself with the home of a fraudulent medium. But as things turn out, Watson is the one to take centrestage. He gets to demonstrate that he is a “man of action” but we also see him making an important deduction of his own. And you’ll find yourself cheering him on, all the way.
The piece has a wonderful touch of humour-in the opening paragraph Watson talks amusingly pragmatically about what must be a rather trying friendship at times. And I love that we’re allowed to witness exactly what an intelligent, brave and capable man he is. In short, why Dr. John H. Watson is the friend and colleague of Sherlock Holmes.
Also, it features the word “harrumph”, which makes it a definite winner in my eyes.
