Holmes looks back at when he first knew Watson-as an association formed out of financial necessity developed into a friendship and also a professional relationship. The older Holmes considers how he gradually came to the realisation that Watson was helping him to find a new way of thinking and was actually improving his work.
This is such an affectionate tribute to Watson. The young Holmes moves from instinctively wanting to work alone to beginning to understand just how important this partnership is going to be. The author has caught Holmes’ voice perfectly and the writing is understatedly beautiful.
