Reccer's comments: I realise it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but I love microfiction. For me, a complete story told in a small number of words is very, very satisfying. I think it’s to do with the fact that every word, and every aspect of the story has to be pretty much essential. The structure has to be stripped down to only what is necessary and the piece has to form a coherent whole. As any piece of writing has to do I suppose, even if it’s a 1,000 page epic. But the longer the story, the more you can get away with the occasional weak part. With microfiction, everything either slots together perfectly, or it doesn’t work at all. I think that’s why a well-written piece of microfiction is such an intense pleasure.

And this fic is an excellent example of the form. It’s atmospheric, tender, subtle, and able to surprise you-all in only 100 words.
