I've just returned from an "informational interview" -- those are those lovely occassions where you interview with someone without the pesky prospect of employment. You're just there for information.
This one didn't go so well.
It mainly served to demonstrate (to myself and the interviewer) how dreadfully unfocused I am. Okay, here I go. Try to focus. Policy analysis and communications. What field? GBLT rights and education and foreign policy. I think I would like fighting for education.
===========================
Key points from the meeting
===========================
1 - Focus
2 - Research potential employers
3 - Contact them, regardless of want ads
4 - Ask "unusual questions" (re: their growth strategy; their challenges)
5 - Sell myself as the solution
6 - Follow up
7 - It takes a long time, but you can create your own job if you catch them early enough
I don't know if I have what it takes. But I reached my temp/placement lady today; still waiting for Target to get back, but she's pursuing a couple other leads as well. Right now that's my best shot.
