If I may ramble on semi coherently for a moment...

It's not that I'm anti authority, we'd be in chaos without it (and not the good kind of chaos where you get controlled excitement, the bad kind of chaos where you get stabbed and people run traffic lights) there's a time and place for the right people to be in authority. What I do have a problem with, is being expected to submit to people I'm smarter and more capable than. How I am supposed to respect the opinion of someone I'm pretty sure just learned how to tie his shoes last week?

I know I'm not alone.

This isn't a political rant, though it applies to The Man as much as it applies to my own small scale current annoyance.

There's a commerical for something, I don't remember what, a cell phone maybe? where this dude who looks like a bigshot says to his faithfull underling, "I'm sticking it to the man." The pee-on replies, "but you are the man, so you're sticking it to yourself?" Then we, the consumers, laugh because the bossman has used a common phrase, and the worker has used the literal meaning to make him look foolish. He himself is "sticking it to the man." That clueless boss/snarky subordinate schtick is comedy gold. He's saying what we are all thinking!

BUT

If we're really all smarter than the men (and women, ha!) in authority positions, why are they the authority and we're not?

Maybe because there's a certain satisfaction in being the snarky subordinate. You're not just better than somone, you're better than the most important someone. And being in a grunt position means you constantly have something to bitch about. Everyone likes that. You can also waste hours of valuable time pondering the ways you would do everything differently, and not actually have to do anything at all.

But probably just because life's a bitch.
