They say that opposites attract. Kyo had never paid attention to such annoying clichés before, but he had to admit that it was probably true.

Tohru was nothing like him, so it really wasn't a surprise that he found himself "falling in love" with her, or whatever overused term was acceptable - after all, Kyo had never been a big fan of himself, so it stood to reason that he would love his polar opposite.

She was kind, and always smiling.

Kyo preferred to remain surly, because he saw no need to try to be nice to random strangers who didn't care about him in the least, and as such, usually frowned.

Tohru was polite, and never got angry with anyone, even when they deserved it (heaven knows he himself had on a few occasions).

He said whatever he felt without sugarcoating, and was easily aggravated, usually yelling about or at someone at least five times a day.

She allowed anyone into her heart happily, without hesitation. She gave the impression of loving everyone on the Earth.

Kyo distanced himself from other people, who would only end up rejecting him one way or the other. He had a general dislike of people, though it was probably grounded in a fear of rejection.

She was tenderhearted.

He wasn't.

Tenderhearted people need a harder heart to shield their own, Kyo decided. The closer you came to people, the more likely you were to get hurt - and Tohru would allow anyone to come close to her. He glared thinking of all the people who would end up hurting her, and sighed with the knowledge that no matter how much she got hurt, she never would stop reaching out to people, never learn that no good deed goes unpunished.

Tohru began to seem more and more like an angel to him - a perfect being who would accept anyone. She didn't deserve to suffer even the slightest thing, he thought, and he wanted to keep her from ever being hurt by anyone or anything. Yet, he knew he couldn't possibly do that, couldn't possibly prevent every hurt of life for her.

So as he stood in silence, awkwardly, as Tohru held back tears looking at her mother's grave, he took her hand in his. It was the best he could do - a hug would turn him into a cat, and even if it wouldn't (if only), he probably wouldn't dare to.

She jerked her head up like he was an alarm clock waking her from a complex dream, and stared at him for a moment like he had grown a second head. Before she looked away, he could see her try to hide a smile, and maybe, just maybe, a blush paint her cheeks.

Both parts of the reaction pleased him maybe a little more than they should have, but not as much as the feeling of her hand tightening around his.

He swore to himself that he would protect her tender heart - or if he couldn't, and it one day broke, he would be there to put the pieces together again.

Tenderhearted and hardhearted - they fit together like puzzle pieces, just as Kyo's hand fit perfectly in his dear polar opposite's.
